Today in Music History: December 1, 1966

Pop, rock, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, techno, soul and gospel, all have unique sounds of their own. Recording artists cross over from one genre to another but not all master multiple genres with No.1 hits. In other words, only a few have sung it all. In today's spotlight is a full-throated, robust baritone who is one such singing legend.

http://www.biography.com/people/tom-jones-21026065
Tom Jones: a Welsh rock, pop, blues and soul singing legend best known as a hit maker over the last five decades in the U.S. and U.K.

Welsh singerSir Thomas Jones Woodward is best known by his stage name Tom Jones. Emerging from the British Invasion in the mid-1960s Jones became one of the most popular vocalists of the era. Tom Jones began singing at an early age, regularly singing at family gatherings, weddings and in his school choir. At 12 years old, Jones developed tuberculosis. Many years later he said: "I spent two years in bed recovering. It was the worst time of my life." During convalescence he could do little else but listen to music and draw.

Since then he has sung nearly every form of popular music – pop, rock, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, techno, soul and gospel – and sold over 100 million records. Jones' bluesy singing style developed out of the sound of American soul music. His early influences included blues and R&B singers.

1966 Tom Jones was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with his version of 'Green Green Grass Of Home'. It stayed at No.1 for seven weeks giving Decca records its first million selling single by a British artist. The song was also a No.1 in Germany for nine weeks and a No.11 hit in the US.
More on this day...

  • 1958The Teddy Bears were at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘To Know Him is to Love Him'. The title of the Phil Spector song came from words on his father’s tombstone.
  • 1973The Carpenters went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Top Of The World', their second US No.1, which was also a No.5 hit in the UK. Country singer Lynn Anderson covered the song and her version became her first hit when it reached No.2 on the US country singles charts in mid-1973.

  • 1984Jim Diamond was at No.1 in the UK singles chart with 'I Should Have Known Better'. The song was displaced after one week by Band Aid's charity single 'Do They Know It's Christmas’. Diamond publicly requested that people not buy his single, but instead buy 'Do They Know It's Christmas’'
  • 1990Vanilla Ice started a four-week run at No.1 in the UK with the single 'Ice Ice Baby'. The track sampled the bass intro to the Queen and David Bowie No.1 'Under Pressure'. 'Ice Ice Baby' was initially released as the B-side to the rapper's cover of 'Play That Funky Music', and became the A-side after US DJ's started playing it.
  • 1990Whitney Houston went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'I'm Your Baby Tonight', her 8th US No.1 and the first for writers and producers Reid and Babyface.
1987 A Kentucky teacher lost her appeal in the US Supreme Court over her sacking after showing Pink Floyd's film 'The Wall' to her class. The court decided that the film was not suitable for minors with its bad language and sexual content.
1997Kenny G set a new world record when he held a note on his saxophone for 45 minutes and 47 seconds. (The record has since been broken by Geovanny Escalante, who held a note for 1 hour, 30 minutes and 45 seconds, using a technique that allows him to blow and breathe at the same time).
In the Christmas Spirit...

2008Wham's 'Last Christmas' was the most played festive track of the last five years. The Performing Right Society put the 1984 hit at the top of their chart of seasonal songs, just ahead of Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas'. The Pogues came third with 'Fairytale of New York', recorded with the late Kirsty MacColl and first released in 1987. Other featured artists include Slade, Mariah Carey and Bruce Springsteen.

#CyberMonday

Shopping madness continues but this time no more having to fight the crowds or wait in lo-o-o-o-ong lines. No more battling the weather in areas where rain or snow might be prevailing. Today you get to shop in the comfort of your own home and stay in your PJs if you so desire while taking advantage of HUGE sales.

December 1 is ...

Cyber Monday occurs on the first Monday after Thanksgiving in the aftermath of Black Friday Insanity. Competition is still at its peak with businesses trying to out beat each other with who has the best deals. This is not just the end of the season closeout, leftovers that no one wanted or overstock account poor decisions, but the time of year to get the best prices on quality merchandise. Matching, slicing, advertising price reductions are all part of this shopping game.

On this day it is easy to overspend! Necessity should always come before wants but that is often a difficult decision when the price is right. The deals won't last long nor will the top items. So, take advantage of some Helpful Tips. Following some very basic instincts might save a lot of stress later on when the credit card bills come due! They may also save headaches down the road from spammers that are only after your money with nothing to give in return for your investment.

Make sure to check out the dedicated page for more Cyber Monday shopping tips and the article on Online Safety Tips/Precaution which are measures that can be taken when shopping online.

Remember...just about everything for sale is on sale somewhere!

#GivingTuesday

During such a hectic time of spending, spending, spending, it is great to flip the coin, shift gears, cross the road to the other side and focus on giving. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement letting the importance of the season take a backseat. Time to step forward with focus on giving back and celebrating generosity!

Plan ahead, December 2 is...

Every day is a day to be thankful. The Two Sides of Thanksgiving provide the opportunity to indulge (often gorge ourselves) in a holiday feast and celebrate a day of gratitude. Rocking chair conversation with family and friends resultes in fireside chatter openly expressing that which we are truly thankful, while at the same time making us sleepy. Trying desperately to keep eyes open is often short lived with the 'L-tryptophan' in the turkey being to blame.

The day after Thanksgiving leaves no time for rest, since adrenaline is pumping ninety to nothing at the crack of dawn in anticipation of making it to the mall in time to at least get a decent place in line. Even if you grab a leftover turkey leg on the way out, the tryptophan doesn't stand a chance against the adrenaline. You are hyped! You are about to engage in Black Friday Insanity!

Maybe you did not make it to the mall on Black Friday. Never fear! #CyberMonday is here! Still time to shop but this time you do not have to leave the house. All shopping will be done online, you don't even have to get out of your PJs.

Words of caution: Leftover turkey makes the BEST sandwiches so be careful you do not crash on the computer keyboard or fall out of your chair! Even the coffee may not be able to work its magic.

So far that is one day of giving thanks and two days of getting deals. Time to even the score. #GivingTuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. This is a day set aside to celebrate generosity and to give...to your family & friends, your favorite charity, within your company or business, and at community centers. It can be a donation of time or money, volunteering and joining in on giving. This is a great segue into Christmas which is the season for giving!

What do YOU plan on giving back?
Inspire your friends!

Today in Music History: December 2, 1979

Music and flowers bring forth melodies of relationships, both love and separation. The velvety petals of the rose strike chords at the heart while the music reaches deep down into the soul. Hold close - in mind, heart, soul - the flowers, the music, the fragrance, the sunlight, for they make up the songs of life.

Welcome into the spotlight one of a duet whose song about a drifting relationship is still heard over today's airways...

Neil Diamond 2007

"I'd like just to continue to write songs that express my own life and feelings. Writing songs and performing for an audience is such a satisfying creative outlet that I can't think of anything else I could do to top it." ~Neil Diamond

Neil Diamond: singer-songwriter who penned No.1 hits for the Monkees, as well as scoring No.1 hits of his own

For Neil Diamond, it all started when he got his first guitar at age16. He began writing his own songs getting his first taste of success with the 1966 single 'Solitary Man'. That same year, he penned the Monkees' No. 1 hit 'I'm a Believer'. Over the next few years, Diamond continued to score hits on his own. The 70s showcased Neil Diamond in the spotlight with his first solo hit 'Cracklin' Rose' (1970) followed by 'Song Sung Blue' two years later. His 1972 live double album Hot August Night, and its predecessor Moods, defined his signature sound and in the case of Hot August Night his live performance style for the future.

On this day, a #1 hit recorded as a duet:
Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand

1979Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand's ‘You Don't Bring Me Flowers’ was at No.1 on the US singles chart. A radio station engineer had spliced together Neil's version with Barbra's version and got such good response, the station added it to their play list. When Neil Diamond was told about it, he decided to re-record the song with Streisand herself, and within weeks of its release, the single went to No.1 in the US and No.5 in the UK. Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand both attended New York City's Erasmus High School, where the Brooklyn-born future superstars were in the school choir at the same time.

More No.1s on this day...

  • 1967 The Monkees album, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd went to number one on the US album chart. It was their fourth album to sell over a million copies, following The Monkees, More Of The Monkees and Headquarters.
  • 1978Rod Stewart was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy', the singers fifth UK chart topper. A plagiarism lawsuit by Brazilian musician Jorge Ben Jor confirmed that the song had been derived from his composition 'Taj Mahal'. Stewart agreed to donate all his royalties from the song to United Nations Children's Fund.
  • 1995Mariah Carey went to No.1 on the US singles chart with her duet with Boyz II Men 'One Sweet Day'. It made Carey the first artist in history to have two consecutive single debuts at No.1, 'Fantasy' being her first.

    • 2001Daniel Bedingfield scored his first UK No.1 single with 'Gotta Get Thru This', the single went back to No.1 in January 2002. The track was recorded in Bedingfield's bedroom with his PC and a microphone, using music software.

1976 The first day of the photo shoot for the forthcoming Pink Floyd Animals album cover took place at Battersea Power Station in London, England with a giant inflatable pig lashed between two of the structure's tall towers. A trained marksman was hired ready to fire if the inflatable escaped, but was not needed on this, the first day. Unfortunately the following day the marksman hadn't been rebooked, so when the inflatable broke free from its moorings, it was able to float away, eventually landing in Kent where it was recovered by a local farmer, reportedly furious that it had ‘scared his cows’.
1983 MTV aired the full 14-minute version of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video for the first time. Now regarded as the most influential pop music video of all time, in 2009, the video was inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, the first music video to ever receive this honor, for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant.
2000Thieves broke into the London home Madonna shares with Guy Ritchie. The raiders forced their way in through a basement door then took a set of car keys before loading up Guy Ritchie's car with some of the couple's possessions and driving off.

Any time is foodie time but when that foodie can be prepared as a snack, side dish, dessert, or even the main course, that puts it on a totally different plane...plate, that is! Not many foods fit that bill, some make great treats doubling as a breakfast item; others make great appetizers that can be increased in volume serving as a main course. But, to meet the criteria of all four is not unheard of, but unusual.

Feeling Tempted

Today in Music History: December 2, 1972

What better way to be tempted than that temptation be entertainment by The Temptations! Not only are their words smooth but gliding movements and synchronization to the music contribute something extra to the moment. The choreography of The Temptations is as signature as their songs!

Welcome into the spotlight...

The "Classic 5" lineup of The Temptations: David Ruffin (bottom left), Melvin Franklin (top left), Paul Williams (top right), Otis Williams (bottom right), and Eddie Kendricks (center) c. 1965.
http://awakenings2012.blogspot.com/2014/03/feeling-tempted.htmlThe Temptations:highly influential to the evolution of R&B and soul music known for their choreography, distinct harmonies, and flashy wardrobe

During the 60s and 70s, The Temptations found success with Motown Records and they are still here. Having sold tens of millions of albums, the Temptations are one of the most successful groups in music history. The singing group was the first Motown recording act to win a Grammy Award. As of 2014, the Temptations continue to perform with one living original member, Otis Williams, still in the lineup.
Over the course of their storied career, the Temptations placed 38 hit records in the pop top 40—not just more than any other Motown Records artist, but more than any American pop group ever. Beyond their quantitative achievements, the Temptations also embodied the original Motown ideal that the records mattered more than the people who made them—for good and for ill. Various intrigues, upsets and tragedies saw the Temptations' lineup change almost annually during their heyday, but the turmoil went largely unnoticed by the record-buying public. Indeed, in an era when pop groups were coming to be known as much for the personalities of their individual members as for their music, the Temptations—a group in which all five members sometimes sang lead—remained essentially unknowable other than through their incredible records. [Source: History.com]
1972The Temptations earn the last of their four chart-topping hits when 'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone' reaches #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was released with the song split into two parts: the A-side was the "vocal" version and runs 6:58; the B-side is the "instrumental" and goes 4:49. Both sides of the single won Grammy awards. The A-side won for Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus, and the B-side took the award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.

Illinois, The Prairie State, Land of Lincoln, The Corn State, The Garden of the West

Illinois State Motto: "State Sovereignty, National Union."

A Tidbit of Trivia...
The ice cream "sundae" was named in Evanston. The piety of the town resented the dissipating influences of the soda fountain on Sunday and the good town fathers, yielding to this churchly influence, passed an ordinance prohibiting the retailing of ice cream sodas on Sunday. Ingenious confectioners and drug store operators obeying the law, served ice cream with the syrup of your choice without the soda. Objections then was made to christening a dish after the Sabbath. So the spelling of "sunday" was changed. It became an established dish and an established word and finally the "sundae".
Seven Wonders of Illinois:Baha'i House of Worship, Starved Rock, Rend Lake, Wrigley Field, Great Rivers Scenic Byway, Blackhawk State Historic Site, Allerton
How did Illinois get its name?
In 1679, the French explorer Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle named the Illinois River after the Indians living along its banks.  The word, Illinois, is the French spelling for the Native Americans called the "Illiniwek" and means "warriors" or "tribe of superior men."The Illiniwek people were really a conglomeration of various tribes. Due to French pronunciation and spelling Illiniwek evolved into Illinois. The state of Illinois was named after the Illinois River.
The most familiar nickname for Illinois is The Prairie State since most of the state was at one time mostly covered with prairie grasses. Second in line would be Land of Lincoln for Illinois is the state where Abraham Lincoln began his political career serving four terms in the Illinois General Assembly. Illinois was also where Lincoln lived when he became President of the United States in 1861. "Land of Lincoln" became the Official State Slogan of Illinois in 1955. Another nickname is The Corn State because the region of the country referred to as the Corn Belt is centered in Iowa and Illinois. The old nickname The Garden of the West came about because of the rolling prairies of Illinois and the miles of cultivated fields that made Illinois one of the leading producers of corn and later, soy beans, in the United States. [Click HERE for additional nicknames.]
http://ilfbpartners.com/corn-life-cycle/
“Watching that grain develop is fascinating to me because of all the things we are able to do with that corn plant,” Len Corzine, a corn farmer from Assumption says, noting corn’s extensive use in livestock feed, food processing and ethanol.
Centrally located in the heart of America's corn belt, Illinois is ranked second in corn production among U.S. states, and Illinois corn is used to produce 40% of the ethanol consumed in the United States. Major landmarks like Columbus Park, the Sears tower, distinctive architectural designs of the Chicago skyscrapers, and the historic Lincoln Tomb, each have unique stories to tell.
After the American Revolution, Illinois became a territory of the United States. It achieved statehood on December 3, 1818 becoming the 21st state to join the union. Illinois is often noted as a microcosm of the entire country. With Chicago in the northeast, small industrial cities and great agricultural productivity in central and northern Illinois, and natural resources like coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a diverse economic base and is a major transportation hub. Springfield is the state capital and the home of the National Historic Site of the home of President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln.
Illinois is a state in the MidwesternUnited States.

The cardinal sings nearly year-round, and the male aggressively defends his 4-acre territory (male cardinals have been seen attacking small red objects mistaken as other males).

1979 A concert by The Who at The Riverfront Coliseum, Cincinnati, turned to disaster when 11 members of the audience were trampled to death after a stampede to claim unreserved seats, another 26 fans were injured. The concert was using 'festival seating' where seats are available on a first come-first served basis. When the waiting fans outside the Coliseum heard the band performing a late sound check, they thought that the concert was beginning and tried to rush into the still-closed doors.
With any music performance comes the possibility of disaster, especially with the record-breaking number of fans waiting, often not so patiently, for concert doors to open. Seats are often sold over capacity with thoughts of "not every ticket sold will seat a warm body." In many cases, dream on! While this day proved to be tragic for an English rock band performing in the United States, they are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century.

Welcome into the spotlight...

The Who: one of the greatest live bands of all time

The Who are one of the world's best-selling bands, having established their reputation on their live shows as much as their studio work. The group established themselves as part of the pop art and mod movements and featured auto-destructive art by destroying guitars and drums on stage. Mod fanatic Peter Meaden becomes the groups' publicist, changes their name to The High Numbers and moulds them into a mod band dressing the band members in mod clothes. They later reverted back to their original stage name, The Who.

The popularity of the band peaked in the 60s and 70s, the period epitomized by the oft-mentioned lyric "Hope I die before I get old" in the 1965 tune 'My Generation'. In 1969, they created Tommy, the first successful rock opera. The song, 'Christmas', written by Pete Townshend, was used in opera when Tommy's father expresses concerns about his son on Christmas morning. Tommy is deaf, dumb and blind, and doesn't appear to have much of a future, but that Christmas, he gets a game of pinball and his life changes when he becomes the 'Pinball Wizard'.

Apple pie and beer—in one dessert!

Ah-h-h-h! The American Classics - baseball, hot dogs, apple pie & Chevrolet! They say America! It is the apple pie, not just the classic pie, that will be the foodie topic of celebration on this day. Pies with fruit as the filling are always a refreshing hit. The blend of the flaky, buttery crust with the fruit filling is enough to make your mouth water just thinking about it. It's not too late to hone in on the celebration, the afternoon is still young and the evening is yet to come.

December 3 is...

Apple Pie Day

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_pie
An apple pie is a fruit pie (or tart) in which the principal filling ingredient is apple. It is sometimes served with whipped cream or ice cream on top, or alongside cheddar cheese. Pastry is generally used top-and-bottom, making it a double-crust pie, the upper crust of which may be a circular shaped crust or a pastry lattice woven of strips; exceptions are deep-dish apple pie with a top crust only, and open-face Tarte Tatin. (Source: en.wikipedia.com)

Some sources report National Apple Pie Day as falling on May 13. If we take both dates into account, then, apple pie can be celebrated twice a year. Definitely seems logical for Apple Pie to be celebrated in the springserved à la mode with vanilla ice cream, OR in the wintertopped with sharp cheddar cheese.

Tidbit of 'Apple Pie' History...
While the United States absolutely loves its apples and apple pie is an American classic, the pie is not an American creation. It was invented in Europe sometime during the 14th century. The first apple pie recipe was printed in England by Geoffrey Chaucer in 138. The ingredients in the recipe included apples, spices, figs, raisins, pears, saffron, and cofyn (a casing of pastry).
Let's start off with a basic apple pie where you can incorporate the store bought crust or make your own from scratch. Most of the time, that is the issue...the time!

Making your own apple pie is much easier than you think
!
Perhaps you don't want to bake a big pie & seem more in the mood for the minis.

Add some sweetness to your day with these delicious cinnamony apple pies. We dare you to resist a second mini!
As much as America loves its apples, especially apple pie, it also loves its beer! So it is not surprising someone concocted a dessert that actually combines the two.

Apple pie and beer—in one dessert
If you like to drink beer and you like to eat dessert, this may be the recipe for you. A crustless apple pie à la mode is topped with foam made from holiday spiced apple beer—a novel dessert. Can you enjoy it with a spiced beer chaser? Of course! Click HERE...
The celebration may be advertised as apple pie day, but by whose rules is the 'pie' served? After all, pizza is known as 'pizza pie'!

Chopsticks, milk, root beer syrup, pizza crust, el-cheapo fried apples, cream cheese, the world's best...most beautiful fried apple pizza pie from the east coast of Arkansas! Oh, boy! Life doesn't get any better than this!

COOKIES!~ a treat for any age but how did they get started, how did the 'cookie' get its name? Did you know the 'cookie' actually goes back to the 7th century? Now, that's a long way back, folks! I doubt very seriously it was the same as the cookie we know today. But, what did it look like? Was it really tasty? How was it sweetened? Is a 'cookie' called a 'cookie' all over the world? Do cookies look and taste the same the world over?

Whoa! Slow down! Stop for a moment! Let's take it easy on the questions and look for some of the answers. Because of the extent of the history behind the cookie, you will need to investigate history of cookies and how baked delights came to be to find the answers.

There are eight basic types of cookies: bar cookies, drop cookies, fried cookies, molded cookies, no-bake cookies, refrigerator (ice box) cookies, rolled cookies and sandwich cookies. Regardless of the type, any time is cookie time at any age! Ready to celebrate and have a cookie...maybe LOTS of cookies?

Welcome into the spotlight...

http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/category/led-zeppelin/

http://b1027.com/get-the-led-out-october-20th-2014/

http://www.ledzeppelin.com/buyLed Zeppelin: not just a thunderous volume, sledgehammer beat, and edge-of-mayhem arrangements made this band the most influential and successful heavy-metal pioneer...It was the band's finesse.

Led Zeppelin were as influential in the decade of the 70s as the Beatles were in the decade prior refining rock not just in that decade alone but for all time. Led Zeppelin combined the visceral power and intensity of hard rock with the finesse and delicacy of British folk music. The influence the band had on the music industry impacted both the classics and alternative rockers.
Like its ancestors the Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin used a guitar style that drew heavily on the blues; its early repertoire included remakes of songs by Howlin' Wolf, Albert King, and Willie Dixon (who later won a sizable settlement from the band in a suit in which he alleged copyright infringement). But Jimmy Page blessed the group with a unique understanding of the guitar and the recording studio as electronic instruments, and of rock as sculptured sound; like Jimi Hendrix, Page had a reason for every bit of distortion, feedback, reverberation, and out-and-out noise that he incorporated. Few of the many acts that try to imitate Led Zeppelin can make the same claim. [Source: RollingStone]

1971Led Zeppelin started a two-week run at No.1 on the UK chart with the Four Symbols album, otherwise known as Led Zeppelin IV Featuring the 8-minute track Stairway To Heaven, the album stayed on the US chart for one week short of five years, selling over 23 million copies in the US alone.

  • 1965  The Byrds started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' the group's second No.1. A No.26 hit in the UK. Unlike their first chart topper, ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’, the entire band was allowed to play on the recording, instead of studio musicians.
  • 1971Sly and the Family Stone started a five-week run at No.1 on the US single chart with 'Family Affair', their third US No.1.
  • 1971T Rex scored their first No.1 album with their 6th release 'Electric Warrior'. The album which became the biggest seller of the year in the UK contained two of T. Rex's most popular songs, 'Get It On' and 'Jeepster.'
  • 1971Don McLean's ‘American Pie’ entered the US Hot 100. The eight and a half minute song would eventually sell over 3 million copies.
  • 1982 The Jam were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Beat Surrender', the group's fourth UK No.1 and final single. They split in 1983, and leader Paul Weller formed the Style Council.
  • 2005Pussycat Dolls were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Stickwitu' The Californian girls second No.1.

1956 The so-called 'Million Dollar Quartet' impromptu jam session took place at Sun Studios in Memphis with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins.

This Day in History: December 5, 1933

With the holiday season comes times for celebration with party after party being in full swing. Along with the party mode, 'spirits' flow...holiday cocktails, festive punch, spiced ciders, all of which might possibly be spiked with vodka, rum or other alcoholic beverage of choice. (See recipes below.) There was a time when the partying in America came to an abrupt halt, in respect to serving alcohol, that is. Here is a step back in time to the era of prohibition, why it was initiated, its effects during the prohibition years and the return of happy days when it ended on this day in history.

December 5, 1933 was the end of an America gone dry but how did it all begin?

Before Prohibition...

(Photograph from Sangamon Valley Collection,
Lincoln Library, Springfield, Illinois.)
By 1830, the average American over 15 years old consumed nearly seven gallons of pure alcohol a year – three times as much as we drink today – and alcohol abuse (primarily by men) was wreaking havoc on the lives of many, particularly in an age when women had few legal rights and were utterly dependent on their husbands for sustenance and support. . .

Read MORE @PBS.org which concludes with...

. . .At 12:01 A.M. on January 17, 1920, the amendment went into effect and Prohibitionists rejoiced that at long last, America had become officially, and (they hoped) irrevocably, dry. But just a few minutes later, six masked bandits with pistols emptied two freight cars full of whiskey from a rail yard in Chicago, another gang stole four casks of grain alcohol from a government bonded warehouse, and still another hijacked a truck carrying whiskey.

And that was just the beginning...

Americans were about to discover that making Prohibition the law of the land had been one thing; enforcing it would be another.

During Prohibition...

The Prohibition era lasted from 1920 through 1933, and was an attempt to legislate morality. It took a Constitutional amendment to enact it, and another one to repeal it. The attempt to decrease the "evils" of alcohol actually created more - and new - types of crime.

On December 5, 1933, the 18th amendment died! This is the only constitutional amendment that has been repealed by another amendment. On this day in history the 21st amendment was ratified and Prohibition officially ended. The day has since been known as Repeal Day carrying with it legalization of the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Interesting fact... The first legal bottle of beer produced by Washington's Abner Drury Brewery was delivered to President Roosevelt at the White House shortly after midnight on April 14, 1933 and stored in the President's pantry because he was still asleep.

Today in Music History: December 5, 2000

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Brother,_Where_Art_Thou%3F_%28soundtrack%29
O Brother, Where Art Thou? is the soundtrack album of music from the 2000 American film of the same name. With the film set in Mississippi during the Great Depression, the soundtrack, produced by T-Bone Burnett, infuses bluegrass, country, gospel, blues, and folk music appropriate to the time period.

The soundtrack experienced a slow climb but eventually went on to sell upwards of 7 million copies. A broad new audience for contemporary artists was reached performing a style of American musicbluegrassthat  had been absent from the pop charts for five decades or more. The soundtrack was originally conceived as a major component of the film, not merely as a background or support.

"I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" has five variations: two are used in the film, one in the music video, and two in the soundtrack. Two of the variations feature the verses being sung back-to-back, and the other three variations feature additional music between each verse.
The film boasts some excellent scenes, thanks in no small part to the Coens' direction and some interesting cinematography and art design. However, the film's most mesmerizing moment no doubt comes when the boys encounter three sirens singing on the rocks of a river.
"Big Rock Candy Mountain", first recorded by Harry McClintock in 1928, is a folk music song about a hobo's idea of paradise, a modern version of the medieval concept of Cockaigne. It is a place where "hens lay soft boiled eggs" and there are "cigarette trees." McClintock claimed to have written the song in 1895, based on tales from his youth hoboing through the United States, but some believe that at least aspects of the song have existed for far longer.

MORE Today in Music History: December 5, 1970

There are probably very few people who are not familiar with the song Amazing Grace. It has been sung by countless choirs, recorded by numerous artists in multiple languages, enjoyed by young and old, and dubbed the most popular song on earth.

Behind the song Amazing Grace is a lot of history. With the recordings of history comes different accounts, some true and some false. One thing for sure, it was penned by John Newton. A number of legends circulate worldwide why John Newton, a slave-trader-turned-minister, penned the hymn. Regardless of the exact reason, its message embodies hope, faith and courage, even in times of the bitterest despair. While Newton supplied the lyrics, the tune sung today arrived much later.

Welcome  into the spotlight...

http://www.judycollins.com/index1.phpJudy Collins:singer & author who has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism

Judy Collins is a folk-pop singer renown for her clear, crisp soprano voice who rose to fame in the 60s and 70s. Her musical talent began with classical piano at an early age with her first performance at the age of 13. In her teens, Collins' interest veered into folk music. She learned to play the guitar and began performing in local clubs in 1959. Her first commercial hit was in 1967 with 'Both Sides Now'.

Today, Judy Collins in her seventies continues to be socially active, recording and performing. Her musical creativity voices music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart.

1970'Amazing Grace' by Judy Collins entered the UK singles chart for the first of eight times, it spent a total of 67 weeks on the chart, the longest run by a female artist. 'Amazing Grace' is a Christian hymn with lyrics written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton which was first published in 1779. "Amazing Grace" has been featured on more than 1,100 albums. Judy Collins' version reached the pop charts in the United Kingdom and the United States. This was during a time of turbulence as U.S. military forces were mired in an unpopular war in Vietnam.

In the fast lanes of the 21st century, time is of the essence! Busy, hectic schedules call for the seeking of that which is easy, quick and convenient! This is especially true in the area of food preparation...in and out of the home! Appliances have made their way into kitchens worldwide for purposes of cutting and saving time in the kitchen. Which appliance saves you the most time?

    December 6 is...

If you were told you must give up the most used cooking appliance in your kitchen, what would that appliance be? It is highly possible your answer is the microwave. Why? Because it is easy to operate, energy efficient, time saving and very convenient. 90% of the homes in the United States have a microwave in the kitchen. 100% of the bachelors definitely own a microwave! Not only in homes but the microwave is possibly found in 99% of all eating establishments. You really don't think the vast numbers of customers, even in the fanciest restaurant, can be served as quickly as need be in the 21st century without the microwave!

    A Bit of Microwave History...
One day in 1945, an American self-taught engineer Percy Spencer was working on an active radar set, he realized that the candy bar he had in his pocket was melting.   The radar had melted his chocolate bar with microwaves and it was right then, on that day, that the specific heating effect of a high-power microwave beam was accidentally discovered. How cool is that?!
Popcorn was the first food that was deliberately cooked with Spencer’s microwave and an egg was the second.  The egg however, exploded in the face of a fellow experimenter.
As with any kitchen appliance, there are dos and don'ts that should be followed for safety precautions. That goes for you personally, as well as the appliance itself.
    Dos...
A beginning list of microwave cooking uses. What would you add to the list?
    • preparing frozen meals
    • warming leftovers
    • reheating coffee
    • melting butter
    • melting chocolate
    • softening brown sugar
    • cooking an entire dinner in less than 10 mins
    • baking a potato in 4 mins
    • proofing yeast doughs
    • roasting garlic
    • preheating veges for the grill
    • steaming veges
    • popping popcorn
     Here are my additions:
    Making "Mug Brownies"!

    My own Chocolate Chip Cookie!

Dos are not limited just to cooking foods. Any ideas to add?
    • heating gel packs for health purposes
    • warming beauty products
    • salvage dried-up mascara
    • kill the bacteria in a sponge
    • softening citrus fruits before squeezing
    • warm plates before serving
    • cleaning up dried candle wax
    • melt old & broken crayons, then, make new ones
    Don'ts...
Surely most, if not all, of these you already know. What faux paus have you encountered? You know, the OOPS!

Celebrate Microwave Oven Day from your favorite breakfast bowl to mid-morning snack to a budget meal for lunch through your mid-afternoon break to your favorite microwaveable meal for dinner!

This Day in History: December 6, 1884

The Washington Monument was constructed as a memorial to George Washington, the First President of the United States of America. On this day in 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a nine-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble. It is the most prominent landmark in Washington, DC standing as the centerpiece of the National Mall. The monument is indeed monumental measuring 555 feet 5 1/8 inches high. Fifty flags surround the base of the Washington Monument symbolizing the 50 states of America.
Made of some 36,000 blocks of marble and granite stacked 555 feet in the air, the monument was the tallest structure in the world at the time of its completion in December 1884. In the six months following the dedication ceremony, over 10,000 people climbed the nearly 900 steps to the top of the Washington Monument. Today, an elevator makes the trip far easier, and more than 800,000 people visit the monument each year. A city law passed in 1910 restricted the height of new buildings to ensure that the monument will remain the tallest structure in Washington, D.C.--a fitting tribute to the man known as the "Father of His Country."[Source: History.com]

UPDATE: On Tuesday, August 23, 2011, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, occurred 84 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., damaging the Washington Monument. During its renovation, a 100-year old time capsule, a copper box, was discovered behind a plaque at the monument. On Wednesday, October 29, 2014, it will be taken from its current location to the nearby Walters Art Museum for safekeeping while restoration work continues. The box hasn’t been opened and no date has been set to open it.

Fall carnivals & festivals, local fairs & bazaars fill the atmosphere in the autumnal season of the year with sights and sounds that bring on the memories of childhood. Such events are, however, not limited to just the fall of the year. Winter carnivals all over the US and abroad toast the winter weather with what has become annual rites. In areas of ice and snow, beautiful life-size sculptures highlight the scenes. Spectacular fireworks illuminate the sky from dusk 'til well after midnight. At any carnival, any time of the year will be a wide variety of vendors. At the top of the list is a special fluffy cloud-like candy served on a cardboard stickspun sugar and candy floss. Ready to be a kid again?

    December 7 is...
    National Cotton Candy Day

National Cotton Candy Day is an annual celebration that falls on two days during the year July 31st and December 7th. On July 31st, cotton candy is available to be enjoyed at a July 4th celebration, amusement park, or at boardwalk concessions. During the month of December, there aren't many fairs and carnivals within the United States since most winter carnivals occur in January or February during times when there is plenty of snow and ice. To enjoy this confection on its December day of celebration might require seeking out a special vendor at a mall, prepackaged cotton candy or trying your own hand using a cotton candy machine. Make this day a family affair and get the kids involved!

A Bit of Cotton Candy History...
Originally called “Fairy Floss”, the process of making Cotton Candy was invented by four men:  Thomas Patton, Josef Delarose Lascaux, John C. Wharton, and William Morrison.  In 1899, Morrison and Wharton were able to patent the first electric cotton candy machine, which used centrifugal force to spin and melt sugar through small holes.  In 1904, these two Nashville candy makers introduced their invention of how to make cotton candy to the St. Louis World’s Fair.  Due to fair goers’ curiosity, these inventors sold approximately 68,655 boxes of cotton candy for 25 cents a box for a total of $17,163.75.  Back then and today this is a great deal of money, just think of the profit that you could make today selling such a low cost and enjoyable product! Read MORE...
This day is not limited to simply enjoying eating the candy fluff on the stick. Jazz up some of your favorite sweet treats. Click each image for its recipe.

Cotton candy can even be served in beverage form. Great cocktail idea for your holiday party.
     Interesting Note:
Cotton Candy Martinis aren't as sweet as you might think. If you're relying solely on the cotton candy as the sweetener, they can actually be quite strong. Cotton Candy is very sweet by itself because it's just sugar but because it's so fluffy it looks like there is a lot more of it than there actually is. As soon as it's reduced to a liquid state it's really not that much.

Today in Music History: December 6, 2008

The alter-egos of many recording artists portray two opposite sides of music and/or performance. One could be pop while the other country, one could be slow, mid-tempo with the other more upbeat. The intent of dual egos is often to market contrasting facets of artistry. Such is the case of the recording artist in today's spotlight who was inspired by her husband, rapper Jay-Z, and jazz singer Etta James to push the limits of her songwriting and artistry.

    Welcome into the spotlight...

Beyoncé:a multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning recording artist who's acclaimed for her thrilling vocals, videos and live shows

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carteris an American singer and actress born and raised in Houston, Texas. Beyoncé rose to fame as the lead singer of Destiny's Child, one of the world's best-selling girl groups of all time. She released her first solo album a year before the group disbanded. Critics hail her as one of the best entertainers in contemporary popular music. In addition to her music career, she has appeared in several movies, including Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Pink Panther and Dreamgirls.

Beyoncé is well-known for her close family tiesher father was her longtime manager, and her mother, with whom she launched a clothing line, designs her stage costumes. Her cousin Angie is her personal assistant, and cousin Marlon is her road manager. Her sister Solange, who is also a singer, sometimes lends a helping hand in songwriting.
"There's always one or two family members with me at all times. I don't go anywhere without someone that loves me and that can tell me the truth. Family is so important to me." ~Beyoncé
2008Beyoncé went to No.1 on the US album chart with I Am...Sasha Fierce, the singers third studio album. It debuted at No.1, making Knowles the third female artist this decade after Britney Spears and Alicia Keys to have her first three albums debut in the top spot. As of March 2011, I Am... Sasha Fierce had sold over seven million copies worldwide, with its digital tracks accounting for an additional 30 million units. The album garnered eight Grammy Award nominations at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, eventually collecting a record setting six wins—the most awards won in one night.
Songfacts:With the release of her third album she introduced her alter ego Sasha Fierce, who is "too aggressive, too strong, too sassy, too sexy." She told CBS News: "I'm not like her in real life at all. I'm not flirtatious and super-confident and fearless like her. What I feel onstage I don't feel anywhere else. It's an out-of-body experience. I created my stage persona to protect myself so that when I go home I don't have to think about what it is I do. Sasha isn't me. The people around me know who I really am." Two years later, Beyonce told MTV she got rid of Sasha Fierce because she's grown enough to be able to merge the two.

This Day in History: December 7, 1941

The numbers of those who remember the sights, sounds, smells of world war, our veterans of WWII, are dwindling. Those who did survive returned home never to be the same, never to lose the memory of the horrors of war. Today, thoughts reflect back upon one of the defining moments in American history...a day that will live in infamy!

    He was there...

    http://www.news-leader.com/story/news/local/ozarks/2014/12/06/pearl-harbor-survivor-jim-carter-still-remembers-attack/20022667/
His hearing is nearly gone, but the memories of the attack 73 years ago today are still fresh in Jim Carter's mind.

Carter, 93, of Republic, might be the Ozarks' last surviving veteran of Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Wife Helen said he rarely talks about what he went through. But late last week Carter, a Navy airplane mechanic on Ford Island in 1941, opened up briefly about that terrible day. Read the entire story...

    Relive the Event...

The day: calm and sunny. The people: going about their daily routines.
The event: a pivotal moment in America’s history.

USS Arizona (BB-39) during the attack
    Source: www.en.wikipedia.org
It was sunny, clear to partly cloudy skies, no different than most any other day with a calmness that rests on a Sunday. The view looking upward resembled a pastel canvas with patches of white scattered about reflective of someone dropping a paintbrush. Unbeknownst to the early risers or those still sleeping in their beds, the brightness of morning was soon to be reduced to ashes of grey.

    There was no warning…

What happened at 7:55 AM on December 7, 1941 pierced the calmness, deafening the scene with what can only be described as dastardly.  Can you imagine the sound of alarms ripping through the air so earsplitting no earplug ever invented could dull the noise? What about the inability to dodge exploding bombs and incessant gunfire as fragments and bullets riveted anything, everything in sight? Can you see yourself heeding the call to abandon ship only to find you are clinging to a life preserver in the midst of burning oil with the last sounds you hear being your own screams as your eyes literally disintegrate in their sockets?

    Remembering Pearl Harbor
It was premeditated. There was no warning…

Imagine a scene of people running, screaming, turning this way, turning that way totally confused, completely panic stricken for no visible clue led the way of which way to turn for there was no way, no apparent way to escape the terror. Buildings offered no hope of safety for the walls were rapidly crumbling burying beneath their weight men, women, even children. For some, what began as a leisurely Sunday morning drive ended...just like that, their life ENDED!  Without regard toward any living thing – plant, animal, human – life was consumed in an instance within flames of pure hell.

    AP Navy Photo
Do you get the picture? There was no warning…

The Japanese shocked the world with the unthinkable leaving behind close to 2,400 Americans dead with another 1,100+ wounded. Recorded story after story fills page after page of book after book in an effort to preserve the memory of the lives lost, sacrificed at Pearl Harbor. A pivotal moment in America’s history led not to annihilation but to an awakening…the undaunted strength of America.  Audio playbacks capture the sounds, video and film reproduce the sights but only those who survived can recall the smells. Those who survived will never forget the sights, the sounds, or the smells of the horror inflicted at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Yet, it wasn’t the end as the Japanese had planned but the beginning of retaliation. The day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his famous Infamy Speech to a Joint Session of Congress, calling for a formal declaration of war on the Empire of Japan.

    Awakening the Sleeping Giant: WWII

In hopes of crippling the United States Pacific Fleet, the Combined Japanese Fleet received orders to attack Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and surrounding military targets. We never saw it coming nor did they in America’s retaliation.

    How could this be possible?
    We were center stage
    Our ships were mighty forceful

    Our men—strong and brave

    But there was no warning…

Secretly designed to destroy on sight
