Vichy what?

With the weather becoming cooler and cooler, the desire for food that is warmer and warmer begins to grow. That thought brings us to one of autumn's and winter's comfort foods. I'm talking about a one-dish meal simmering on the stovetop or perhaps in a crockpot. Convenient. Delicious. Nutritious. Yep...soup! Um-m-m-m? There is just one problem. It is November and the soup of the day is best when served cold. Perhaps we should continue and investigate whether eating it warm on a cold day is as good as eating it cold on a hot day.

November 18 is...

NATIONAL VICHYSSOISE DAY
pronounced: vish – e – swaz

Vichyssoise is an American soup of French-style. It is an easy appetizers soup. It was created in 1917 by a French chef named Louis Diat when he was working at the Ritz-Carlton in New York. He named the dish after “Vichy,” a town near to where he grew up. The soup is made thick with puréed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream and chicken stock.
Since vichyssoise is traditionally served cold it is uncertain why it is celebrated during the month of November. I suppose somewhere in the world the days are warm and sunny inviting the taste of something cool to the tongue. For those of us already experiencing cooler days and nights, perhaps a hot vichyssoise is in order. Try it! You just might like it.

Some Like It Hot...vichyssoise...some Like It Cold! (Recipe)

Bottom Line...
Regardless how it is spelled or pronounced, is vichyssoise delicious creamy potato soup? If a chunky, hot soup is desired, do not puree & leave hefty bits of potato, add cream and heat gently. Make it up ahead of time, then, when ready to serve, heat (potato soup) or serve cold (vichyssoise) garnished with a few finely chopped chives.

Today in Music History: November 17, 1958

With six notes rolling melodically off a banjo and the spoken words of "Throughout history, there have been many songs written about the eternal triangle. This next one tells the story of a Mr. Grayson, a beautiful woman, and a condemned man named Tom Dooley," a trio of musicians began to take the world by storm.

The Kingston Trio: smooth three part harmonies, collegiate appeal, trademark candy-striped shirts single-handedly revolutionize folk music

Emerging from San Francisco's North Beach club was a trio of musicians who took the music world, the entire country in fact, by storm in 1957. With their eloquent three part harmonies, they brought the rich tradition of American folk music into the mainstream for the first time. The Trio influenced music genres of a generation enjoying unprecedented record sales and ultimately worldwide fame.

The songs of the Kingston Trio play on and on now well into the 21st century. Great songs sound as good today as the first time played, recorded, and distributed. It has been over fifty years since Tom Dooley hit the top of the charts. It can still be heard over the airways, in homes and on stage. What is the Trio doing today? Still on the road bringing back all those wonderful memories while continuing to make new ones.

1958The Kingston Trio's 'Tom Dooley' hit #1 on the Billboard pop chart. The trio introduced the astonishingly fresh sound of a 100-year-old folk song into the American pop mainstream of '58. 'Tom Dooley' became the mammoth hit that launched the Kingston Trio's massively successful career.
Also on this day...

  •  1962 The Four Seasons started a five week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Big Girls Don't Cry', the group's second No.1 of the year. It made No.13 in the UK.
  •  1966 The Beach Boys were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Good Vibrations.' As a child, his mother told him that dogs could pick up "vibrations" from people, so that the dog would bark at "bad vibrations" Wilson turned this into the general idea for the song.
  • 1979 The Commodores went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Still', the group's second US No.1 single, it made No.4 in the UK.

And a Double Whammy...

1985Wham!Were at No.1 on the UK album chart with Make It Big and No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Wake Me Up Before You Go Go'. Michael's inspiration for the song was a scribbled note left by his Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley for Andrew's parents, originally intended to read "wake me up before you go" but with "up" accidentally written twice, so Ridgeley wrote "go" twice on purpose.

Why GRAND is so grand!

Thanksgiving falls within the autumnal season of the year. Within that time of year are many of our friends and family in their autumnal years to whom we should all remain thankful. Those to whom being specifically referenced are our grandparentsThere is no wonder why grandparents begin with the word GRAND! It is really no secret. The ancestral chain continues as sons and daughters beget sons and daughters. The bloodline continues. Responsibility shifts with the wisdom and heritage being continuously tapped. While the word itself reflects the next in line in the order of things, it also reflects awe-inspiring feelings.

Whether one is called Gramma, Gamma, G-ma, Gram, Grammy, Grams or Gramps, Grandad, Grandaddy, G-daddy, Grandpappy, Grandpop OR one of 120 top nicknames for grandparents, the meaning is still the same. The emphasis is G.R.A.N.D. regardless if the word is part of the name or if it is not!
Gracious.Really specialAgood listener. Naturally loving. Devoted to family.

This is also SO TRUE for Grandpa!

Need any more be said?

Remember all GRANDparents who carry such agrand title! They always remember you...

Ready to bake some cookies for Thanksgiving? Go visit GRANDma! Um-m-m? Wonder how many will last until Thanksgiving dinner? Not to worry! Bake enough to last from now 'til then! The result will be mouth-watering and delicious while the memories...priceless!

Today in Music History: November 18, 1956

After a storm comes a calm. The words of Matthew Henry preserved as an iconic quote are still just as prevalent today as penned sometime in the 17th century. The storms of life often have a humbling effect with the calm being the precedent to events that lie ahead. Such happened in the life of a R&B star allowing a whole new generation to fall in love with him all over again.

Welcome into the spotlight...

http://www.biography.com/people/fats-domino-9276748Fats Domino: rhythm-and-blues star who became one of the first rock-and-roll stars and who helped define the New Orleans sound

Rhythm-and-blues, rock 'n' roll both effectively describe Fats Domino. His rolling piano and "wah-wah" vocalizing over a strong back beat categorized Domino's first rock and roll record, 'The Fat Man'. That was in 1950. Before 1955, he had released five gold (million-copy-selling) records. He also had 35 Top 40 American hits and has a music style based on traditional rhythm and blues ensembles of bass, piano, electric guitar, drums, and saxophone.

For today's step back in time...

1956Fats Domino appeared on the US TV Ed Sullivan Show performing 'Blueberry Hill'. Before the song became a rock and roll standard it had been recorded by various artists including Louis Armstrong, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Gene Autry and Jimmy Dorsey. The version by Fats Domino was ranked No.82 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Fats Domino, wearing a National Medal of Arts, a replacement by President George W. Bush on August 29, 2006, after the original, bestowed upon him by former President Bill Clinton, was lost in the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina.
In 2005, Fats Domino was rescued from New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit the city. The 77-year-old singer had been reported missing since the storm in New Orleans which had flooded the city leaving thousands feared dead. In 2008, Domino was presented with Grammy Hall of Fame awards for 'Ain't That a Shame' and 'Blueberry Hill'. The awards were originally received in 2002 and 1987 respectively, but were lost when Domino's house was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

After Katrina, Fats Domino made some public appearances around his home city of New Orleans. A greatest hits album was also released in 2007, allowing a whole new generation to fall for Fats Domino all over again. Source: Biography.com
Now in his eighties, Fats Domino will always be remembered as one of rock's early stars. He also helped break down color barriers, getting white stations to play his songs and playing to racially diverse audiences.

When I first started the What's happenin'? contributions in February, you were informed of being enlightened on some weird, bizarre celebrations on a particular day as it approached. As was then and throughout the year, the decision was yours on how to celebrate if that is indeed your forte. Oh, my, we have been surprised at some crazy things being celebrated. Stated then and still true today, if something exists, I do believe you or I shall find a day during which it is celebrated. The upcoming celebration is no exception!

World Toilet Day

http://www.nationalpurity.com/world-toilet-day-raises-awareness-of-global-sanitation-crisis/

Yes, this day is for real! There IS a World Toilet Day and actually exists for a good cause. That is why it is designated as a 'world' day recognized by the United Nations as a global event...to educate and inform everyone on the importance of good sanitation practices, provide statistics on areas of poor sewage, and facilitate changes toward proper transformation for improvement.
http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/factoid1/p/thomas_crapper.htm According to the World Toilet Organization, “Over a billion of the 6 billion people in the world - one in three people across the globe - are served by sewerage systems but much of this sewerage is discharged into rivers, lakes and the sea with little or no treatment.”
An old privy or outhouse
(Photo credit: The Library of Congress)
There was a time when only bushes offered some sense of privacy for 'personal business'. Heaven forbid what people did during the winter when there were NO leaves on the bushes! During the early Roman Empire, rows of 'holes' allowed places for people to sit and 'drop their waste' into water troughs where it was washed into the river. Through the years different modes were provided with one most prevalent being the outhouse. Holes were dug in the ground and when full, one simply moved the 'house' to a different location.

The modern 'flush' toilet carries with it some stories of its own, especially about the name, not toilet but two of the 101 Names for the Toilet! Crapper and John. There are persons who actually existed who were associated with the toilet as we know it today.
Analysis:Thomas Crapper (1836-1910) did exist, and was a plumber, and is, in fact, credited with improving the functionality of the early flush toilet (or "water closet," as it was then called), but he did not, contrary to popular belief, invent the pseudo-eponymous bathroom appliance from scratch.
Credit for that goes to 16th-century author Sir John Harington, who not only came up with the idea but installed an early working prototype in the palace of Queen Elizabeth I, his godmother. The first patent for a flushing water closet was issued to Alexander Cummings in 1775, sixty years before Thomas Crapper was born...
...Though he made his name as a sanitary engineer to bluebloods, Crapper himself was lowborn and never knighted, so it's a mystery why storytellers consistently award him the title "Sir."

Compounding the error, he is sometimes referred to as "Sir John Crapper."

With a song's success comes covers that are often just as successful, sometimes even more so. The era is different, the genre may vary, the beat possibly is of a quicker or perhaps a slower tempo, even the gender of the artist may change but the lyrics...they remain the same. Comparisons are always interesting as is the perception of the listeners. A version liked by one is not always liked by all.

Who is your favorite?

1955Carl Perkins recorded 'Blue Suede Shoes' at Sun Studios in Memphis. The rock 'n' roll classic became a US No.2 & UK No.10 hit for Perkins in 1956.

'Blue Suede Shoes' has been covered by many acts including Elvis Presley and John Lennon. Listen and see if you have a preference. (The Lennon version doesn't begin until about a min into the video.)

1964 The Supremes became the first all girl group to have a UK No.1 single when 'Baby Love' went to the top of the charts. Written and produced by Motown's main production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, it was also the second of five Supremes songs in a row to go to No.1 in the United States.
In 2002, Emma Bunton performed at Party at the Palace, an event that was held at Buckingham Palace Garden on 3 June 2002 in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II. Her solo performance at the event was a cover of The Supremes' 1964 hit 'Baby Love'.

1966 The Supremes started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'You Keep Me Hangin' On', the group's 7th US No.1. It made No.8 in the UK.

In 1986, Kim Wilde had a UK number two hit with her version of The Supremes' song "You Keep Me Hangin' On", which also went on to be a major US hit, topping the U.S. charts in 1987.

1983Tina Turner made her first chart appearance in over ten years with her version of the Al Green hit 'Let's Stay Together'.
In 1971, Al Green's release of "Let's Stay Together" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and remained on the chart for 16 weeks and also topped Billboard's R&B chart for nine weeks. Billboard ranked it as the No. 11 song of 1972.

One Hit Wonder on This Day...

1988Robin Beck was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'First Time'. The song was from a TV advertisement for Coca-Cola which session singer Beck had recorded. It made the American a One hit wonder.

Multi Chart Topper on This Day...
"Can't Fight The Moonlight" reached #1 in Australia, where it was their highest selling single in 2001. It also topped the charts in the UK, The Netherlands and New Zealand. Despite being closer to a dance number, it topped the US Country charts because of Rime's background.
2000LeAnn Rimes started a two-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Can't Fight The Moonlight', the singer's first UK chart topper. Written by Diane Warren and featured on the soundtrack of the film Coyote Ugly.
Albums on This Day...

  • 1988Bon Jovi started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with lead single from the band's album New Jersey, 'Bad Medicine', which became the group's third US No.1, and a No.17 hit in the UK.
    • 2000 The Beatles started an eleven-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with The Beatles 1. The album features virtually every number-one single released from 1962 to 1970. Issued on the 30th anniversary of the band's break-up, it was their first compilation available on one CD. The world's best-selling album of the 21st century, The Beatles 1 has sold over 31 million copies.
    • 2001 Mick Jagger released his new solo album 'Goddess In The Doorway'. First day sales stood at 954 copies.
    • 2006 George Michael went to No.1 on the UK album chart with 'Twenty Five' the singers sixth UK No.1 album.

There just cannot be enough foodie days! Let's face it...everyday is a foodie day, especially if you have a sweet tooth! Then, to celebrate one of our nation's favorite foods and on our own add chocolate...what can be said? Bring it on!

November 20 is...

http://www.hungryhappenings.com/2012/02/fudgy-peanut-butter-and-chocolate.html

The love of peanut butter is nationwide. It has been a staple in American kitchens for over a century...peanut butter sandwiches, peanut butter ice cream, in combination or alone. It is not surprising for its day of celebration to pop up in the middle of November. After all, November is..., among other things, Peanut Butter Month! There will be more than 60,000,000 (60 million) pounds of peanut butter consumed during this month!

Let's not let the peanut butter on this day be alone...how about a chocolate partner whipped into the fudge!

A Bit of 'Fudge' History...
According to legend, the origin of fudge can be traced back to the 1800s when people used the word "fudge" to mean "cheat" or "mess up." One day, a chef accidentally "fudged" a batch of caramel he was trying to make, inventing the delicious confection we know and love it today.
Try your hand at making a homemade batch of Peanut Butter Fudge and it doesn't have to be simply traditional!

Today in Music History: November 20

Of the most often topics for song lyrics, songs about life would be at the top of the list with love not far behind. Who can't relate to a good love song either in dreams or reality? Love comes from the heart extending deep into the soul. Sometimes the song becomes a love letter saying just what is needed to be said at a special time or it can be at the other end of the spectrum declaring what once was is now gone.

http://www.barbrastreisand.com/us/partnersBarbra Streisand: the highest-selling female recording artist of all time who has won awards and acclaim in every medium that she's worked in

The accolades of Barbra Streisand are astounding with dozens of gold- and platinum-selling albums to her credit. She has mastered nearly every entertainment medium available and won honors in all the major award institutions, music and acting. Her beginning goes back to a time when she worked as a cabaret singer after high school instead of attending college. It was her Broadway debut that led to a recording contract followed by a lo-o-ong list of gold records.

As with so many recording artists, actors and actresses, Streisand's childhood was plagued with adversity...loss of her father at 15 months old, family life on the brink of poverty, an emotionally abusive stepfather, unsupportive mother, and most of all shyness as a child leaving her often feeling rejected by other children because her looks were considered unusual.
She claims that she learned how to cover her insecurity on stage by studying the flamboyance of the drag queens she met during this time. Still, Streisand is infamous for having avoided live performances for nearly three decades due to a debilitating bout of stage fright. She attributes the phobia to a concert in New York's Central Park in 1967, during which she forgot the lyrics to one of her songs. Source: bio.com

Barbra Streisand Mini-Biography

On this day, a #1 hit recorded as a duet: Barbra Streisand and the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer

1979 Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer were at No.1 on the U.S. singles chart with 'No More Tears, Enough Is Enough', it was also an international hit reaching No.3 in the UK. The single spent two weeks at number one on the U.S. singles chart (making it both singers' fourth chart-topping single in the U.S., as well as Summer's final). On the disco chart, it went to number one for four weeks.
More No.1s on this day...

  • 1955 The song that changed popular music history 'Rock Around The Clock' by Bill Haley & His Comets went to No.1 on the UK singles chart. The song was used under the opening credits of the film Blackboard Jungle. The song entered the charts a further six times until 1974.

  • 1965 The Supremes had their sixth US No.1 single with the Motown production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland's, 'I Hear A Symphony'.

  • 1967 Strawberry Alarm Clock were at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Incense And Peppermints'.

    • 1971Isaac Hayes started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Theme From Shaft', it made No.4 in the UK. Hayes won a Grammy award for Best Original Film Score with 'Theme From Shaft'.

1955Bo Diddley appeared on US The Ed Sullivan Show television show. The show had requested that he sang his version of ‘Sixteen Tons’, but, when he appeared on stage, he sang his own song ‘Bo Diddley’ resulting in him being banned from further appearances on the show.
1998 A study comparing noise levels of rock music, found that older people rated rock music much higher on a loudness scale than younger people. The researchers carried out by Ohio University tested people age 18 to 21 and people ranging in age from 51 to 58. The study asked participants to rate the loudness of rock music played at nine intensities, ranging from 10 decibels to 90 decibels. Participants listened to ‘Heartbreaker’ by Led Zeppelin for 10 seconds at different intensities. At each intensity, the older subjects gave the music higher numerical ratings based on loudness than the younger subjects.
2005Robbie Williams smashed a Guinness World Record by selling more than 1.6 million tickets for his 2006 World Tour in one day. The tickets, snapped up on the first day of sale, were valued at an estimated £80 million.

Hello, World!

The art of communication in the 21st century is phenomenal. Today it is possible to communicate with someone globally with the click of a button or mouse. Technology has advanced systems via airways that allow for both sound and video correspondence, as well as entertainment. Between 1911 and 1977, the first messages sent around the world and out of this world exemplified technology, science, and inventions progressing at an accelerated rate. It is of no surprise that on this day are two celebrations related not only to corresponding but peaceful communication.

November 21 is...

Ever had a bad day where it only took a single word, "hello", "hi", or someone asking "How are you?" to make you feel better? Such a simple gesture showing that someone cares, especially when accompanied by a smile, can do so much! Now, think about the power of communication on a global aspect.

Our world is vast is terms of cross country travel but rather small when transmitting via the airways. The gist of World Hello Day is to bring a sense of community to everyone around the world. The history of World Hello Day dates back to its creation in 1973. The 70s were plagued with conflict so a day of communicating peacefully was a welcomed change from the animosity and violence across oceans. Today, world conflicts are still centerfold. The purpose of World Hello Day is encouragement to reach out in a voice of peace settling any disputes, reaching resolution peacefully, rather than forcefully. Unfortunately, as with events of the present, there must be willingness on all parties to both talk and listen.

On this day, create the domino effect and start a chain of communication. The more you greet peacefully, the more that will be greeted peacefully as each 'hello' is passed along. This celebration is the 42nd Hello World Day. Keep the voice of peace moving along loud and strong!

While we cannot join hands literally, we can certainly join voices!

 https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-television-day/
Since its inception with the progress of television has come controversy over whether it is healthy or not, good or bad. Yes, the TV has opened windows to the world allowing insight into people and places only once part of the imagination. But, has it overstepped the boundaries of integrity and morality? While this may be true that is not this day's focus and will just have to wait until another day.

The United Nations (UN) declared each November 21 as World Television Day. Must be serious coming from the United Nations, which means the UN hasn't established this day to encourage watching more TV or our favorite programs and comedies.

World Television Day is not a celebration of the tool but brings insight into the world of television, attention to world events, threats and conflicts, why they are happening and what is being done to prevent further issues from arising. It is a celebration of the philosophy which it represents, it is the significance of television in today’s international issues. World Television Day highlights how communications can facilitate social and cultural development, and encourages cooperation and partnerships in international media.

   Television is universal.

North Carolina, Tar Heel State, Old North State, Land of the Sky

North Carolina State Motto: “To Be Rather Than to Seem” (Esse Quam Videri )

http://www.vahighways.com/ncannex/route-log/nc128.html
"Where soars Mount Mitchell's summit great, In the "Land of the Sky," in the Old North State!"

What does North Carolina mean?
Carolina is taken from the Latin word for Charles (Carolus), honoring King Charles I of England (who made the original land grant in 1629). North Carolina was formed in 1729 when the Carolina colony was divided in two.
In early days, tar was one of North Carolina's major products, thus, the adaptation of its nickname The Tar Heel State. There are two contradictory stories about the origin of this nickname and reference to 'tar heel'. Both stories concern Civil War battles in which North Carolina troops were involved. Old North State simply comes from the division of land in 1729 that divided the Carolina province into what is known today as North and South Carolina. Land of the Sky was derived from the book, The Land of the Sky (1876), by Frances Fisher Tieran (pen name Christian Reid). This nickname references the Blue Ridge and the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina.

One of the thirteen original colonies, North Carolina has a long an interesting history. Following the Revolutionary War, the state developed an extensive slave plantation system and became a major exporter of cotton and tobacco, although the slave population remained relatively small compared to that of other southern states. On November 21, 1789, North Carolina became the 12th state to join the union. In 1861, North Carolina became one of 11 states to secede from the United States, beginning the American Civil War. In 1903, the state became the site of the first manned self-propelled airplane flight when the Wright brothers took off from a cliff near Kitty Hawk. North Carolina is the largest producer of sweet potatoes in the nation. In 2011, farmers within the state harvested 64,000 acres—yielding 1.28 billion pounds of the vitamin A-rich tubers. The capital of North Carolina is Raleigh
[The thirteen colonies were: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and  Rhode Island and Providence Plantations]

North Carolina is a state in the Southeastern United States.

The voice of the Northern Cardinal is a rich what-cheer, cheer, cheer; purty-purty-purty-purty or sweet-sweet-sweet-sweet. Also a metallic chip.

While roaring crowds in rocking amphitheaters are thrilling, nothing beats the intimacy of a small, iconic music venue. From a funky beach bar with an attic library to a glam concert hall with chic chandeliers, these local legends prove it’s not the musician that creates the unforgettable experience, but the venue itself.

Black Friday Total Insanity! Will you be there?

$

This time next week the atmosphere will be sheer madness! Not only will we be celebrating another TGIF but a wild and frantic TGIF filled with shopping craziness.

Sale! Sale! Sale! Everywhere...Sale! Sale! Sale! Save! Save! Save! In the news, on TV, on the Internet, on the radio, no matter where you turn somebody somewhere has posted a sign...Sale! Sale! Sale! Come on in! Come on down! HOT deals today! Save 10%...20%...30%... MORE!

BUT, what makes this 'salebration' any different from any other sale? Are the deals any better? The savings any greater? The items offered for sale on sale of any higher quality? Is anything for sale NOT on sale?

What's with this insanity that has everyone astir? A sale is a sale on any day when its ad says "Save 10%...20%...30%...MORE!" Items can be found at a discount! On sale! Buy one, get one! More! More! More! Better still, people don't have to wake up at the crack of dawn or camp out 'til doors open. They'll take the ad, maybe a coupon or two, and gingerly search the sale racks for an item or two. NOT on Black Friday! NO, sir! Got to get there first or 'what I want, when I want, where I want, how I want' won't be there! Yea, like that is going to happen...I will bet you there are upteen more of that same item in the stockroom just waiting to be pulled out at the right time! What's even worse is the thought of how much items have been marked up in order for them to be marked down for that so-called 10%...20%...30%...MORE savings.

Embrace the Past...

The first wave of shoppers depicted sheer madness... madness of the worse order, I mean MADness! Running, bumping into one another, even literally knocking down the door! OOPS! An old gentleman fell. Someone help him up! Nah! Can't take the time or MY item will be snatched up by the lady at my right. MINE! I got here at 3:00 AM, 20 minutes before her.

Notice that was just the first wave! There was ultimately a lull. Others were waiting at home enjoying morning coffee and homemade muffins 'til their time was right. This group appeared on the scene ready to scavenge what was left hoping some 'meat' still clung among the scraps left on the racks.

Looking at the videos makes me want to stay home! Plenty of time to shop online!

Empower the Present...

Black Friday is not just for Friday anymore. While many prepared for time with family and friends to feast on turkey and dressing savoring thoughts of saving enough room for succulent pumpkin pie, others left home before sunrise to stand in the cold, waiting in line - long-long-long lines - for doors to open announcing the beginning of Thanksgiving Day sales. Then, there are some who enjoyed the holiday feast only to end the day shopping for pre-Black Friday bargains after all the bone picking was done. Makes one wonder what was on their minds - giving thanks for all they had or giving thanks for all they hoped to have after taking advantage of the sales.

Is something being lost here? When having more is more important than more time with family then something is wrong, very wrong. This brings us back to earlier questions to still ponder: What makes this 'salebration' any different from any other sale? Are the deals any better? The savings any greater? The items offered for sale on sale of any higher quality? Is anything NOT on sale for sale?

Enrich the Future...

With the age of advancing technology, one does not have to leave home to shop. Nor does one have to leave home to take advantage of special sales. There is Walmart & Walmart Online, K-Mart & K-Mart Online, Best Buy & Best Buy Online, etc. Pretty much if it is to be bought, it can be bought at an online store which allows one to stay in the comfort of home leaving the cold and crowds to eventually fade as ghosts of times past.

Of course, retailers would much prefer customers to shop in store hoping the more they see the more they will buy. One is more likely to pass up an item online vs. seeing it in real life, being able to feel it! However, there are things to be bought and sold both ways. Just remember, they are things. Stay home, spend time with family!

Bottom Line...

There is no difference in this 'salebration' than any other sale. The deals aren't any better. The savings any greater. The items offered for sale on sale aren't of any higher quality. There are items NOT on sale for sale but bargains are still always available.

What is your madness...in store or online?

Are you one who prefers to experience the insanity, the madness of Black Friday sales? If so, good luck and watch out for the other guy! There is a chance someone might get hurt when Black Friday madness takes a tragic turn.

Get up & get outside! Ready for a ride?

Within the 21st century has come more time spent indoors, thus, less time outdoors. Jobs demand longer hours with little time left for anything other than responsibilities once home. Then, unfortunately, what time is left may be spent in front of the television because by that time all energies have been expended. Therefore, a continuation of being indoors! How about a change in scenery?

November 22 is...

National Go For a Ride Day

How could you 'ride' this road? Automobile, bus, bicycle, motorcycle, scooter, skate board, truck, RV, or you could possibly simply walk it!
The idea is just to get outside...away from the confinement of walls. Get away from it all. Into the fresh air. Under the open skies. Away from the daily stress. Go For A Ride Day encourages you to get out into the world – hop on your bike, into your car, or simply get your walking boots out of storage and go on a hike. Don’t worry too much about where you’re going, just enjoy the ride. The only thing in front of you should be the open road, an open trail, open skies or open water. Yep, an airplane or boat ride would also suffice OR somewhere there is already plenty of snow...

Whereas somewhere else there is balmy weather...

OR you could ride off into the sunset in style...

However you decide to celebrate Go for a Ride Day, make sure it is a celebration of freedom and open spaces!

Today in Music History: November 21

 Music...
A day filled with music is a day filled with sunshine. Even on gloomy winter days music can alter the scene altogether. In other words, music can make you happy when skies are grey! Grab a mug of hot cocoa, put a smile on your face as you step back in time with musical memories over six decades - from 1954 to 2004.

A toast to good memories & happy listening...

1954 American singer and actress Rosemary Clooney was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'This Ole House'. This song was also a No.1 for Shakin' Stevens in 1981. Her nephew, George Clooney was a pallbearer at her funeral in 2002.
1960Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Stay', the shortest ever US No.1 single at one minute 37 seconds. A No.14 hit in the UK in 1961.

1981Queen and David Bowie were at No.1 in the UK with 'Under Pressure'. They recorded the song together when both acts were working in a German recording studio. It was David Bowie's first released collaboration with another recording artist.
1983Michael Jackson's 14-minute video for 'Thriller', was premiered in Los Angeles. Directed by John Landis and co-starring former Playboy centerfold Ola Ray. The video (like the song) contains a spoken word performance by horror film veteran Vincent Price. The video was filmed at the Palace Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, the zombie dance sequence at the junction of Union Pacific Avenue and South Calzona Street in East Los Angeles and the final house scene in the Angeleno Heights neighborhood at 1345 Carroll Avenue.
1987Billy Idol knocked Tiffany from the No.1 single position on the US singles chart with his version of Tommy James 'Mony Mony'. Tiffany had been at No.1 with another Tommy James song ' I Think We're Alone Now'.
1992Charles and Eddie were at No.1 in the UK singles chart with 'Would I Lie To You' the debut single by the pop-soul duo and their only chart topper.
1999The Wamdue Project went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'King Of My Castle'. First released in 1998 when it made No.121 on the chart selling just 350 copies in the first week of release.
2004Eminem was at No.1 on the US album chart with Encore, his third US No.1 album. Girls Aloud started a two week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of the Pretenders 'I'll Stand By You'. This was 2004's single for the Children In Need appeal with its proceeds going towards the charity.

This Day in History: November 22, 1963

There are many events that altered the course of history. Had they not occurred the world as we know it today might possibly be quite different. There will always be rumors of war, war and assassinations. Freedom is not free but comes at a high price...
"The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Kennedy
 35thPresident of the United States
Do you recognize the face? You should whether you lived the era of the 60s or studied about its monumental events in a history class. This was the decade that changed a nation. November 22 encompasses a day filled with overwhelming sadness for America. As we embrace the past, one of the most shocking events in our nation's history occurred on his day in 1963.
Embrace the Past. . .
Even though cooler temperatures had been predicted, clear skies and a warm sunny day engulfed Dallas, TX on that memorable day. President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy exhibited their usual charm in preparation for the President to speak at a luncheon with civic and business leaders at the Trade Mart.
But, that speech was never to be given. . .

"His assassination on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, sent shockwaves around the world and turned the all-too-human Kennedy into a larger-than-life heroic figure. To this day, historians continue to rank him among the best-loved presidents in American history."[Source: History.com]
Three Shots Fired

Assassination was not new to America
but definitely unforeseen and astonishing.
What was intended to be a push for reelection
ended in a cataclysm that led the American nation
in a totally new direction.

File:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gif

A mass of zealous people
Overran the streets, standing blade to blade
Waiting for even a glimpse
Of the thirty-fifth President’s motorcade

File:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gif

Then, shots rang out in Dealey Plaza!
From whence did they come?
The Texas Book Depository?
“Grassy knoll” said some

 File:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gif

This tragic event of ’63
Took the life of a young president
Leaving an undying memory
An iconic figure unduly spent

 File:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gif

Was it a conspiracy
Or the lone gunman accused?
What major discrepancies
Left people beguiled? bemused?

File:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gif

Those of us who lived that era
Still remember the dire words that aired
From CBS News’ Walter Cronkite
“In Dallas, Texas, three shots were fired…

 File:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gif

Engulfed in numbing disbelief
Eyes filled with tears, limbs became numb
A nation’s people cried in shock
“What has been done? What has been done?”

File:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gifFile:Tiny Star.gif

What happened next became history
John F. Kennedy was dead
Now it’s been fifty years
With much truth still left unsaid

“Change is the law of life.
And those who look only to the past or the present
are certain to miss the future.”
—John F. Kennedy

Remember the words of President John F. Kennedy:

 Empower the Present. . .
"Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future."
John F. Kennedy

Enrich the Future. . .

"The rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened."

Founder of the Dance Revolution

Today in Music History: November 22, 1975

So often any one of us may be familiar with a band but really don't know the name or the face behind the music. The same is true of individual recording artists. If you were asked whether you like the music of Reginald Kenneth Dwightwould you have to stop and think for a moment? Would the reaction be the same if the name Elton John was substituted? What about Chris Gaines? Ever heard of him? Of course you have...he's Garth Brooks' alto ego. Today's spotlight is on a band of world renown but possibly only if the band's name was presented upfront.

 The Leader

http://www.heykcsb.com/history.html

Harry Wayne Casey founder of the dance revolution

Back in the day there was no one 'badder' than Harry Wayne Casey. He was leader of a 70s supergroup whose music is still going strong today with songs being covered multiple times by numerous artists. One of Casey's greatest influences was the organ music he heard when he attended church with his family. His mother and sister sang on commercials so he was naturally enveloped with music. As with any upcoming recording artist, a rhythm and personal style had to be established. Harry Wayne Casey's music was the kind of music that got people out of their seats and onto the dance floor. But, it was not Casey alone. The birth of his band not only brought legendary music to the world but also influenced an entire generation.

Whose music has been featured at EVERY major sporting event in the world including the Super Bowl, World Series, Conference Championships, The NBA, Collegiate Bowl Games National Championship Games, the NASCAR racing Circuit and Championships, The World Cup, The Indianapolis 500, The Kentucky Derby, EVERY Holiday Parade include the famous Macys Thanksgiving Day parade, and the Tournament of Roses Parade, Political Party Conventions, Presidential Campaigns and nearly EVERY wedding, confirmation, and bar mitzvah in the world?
Whose music has been featured on more than 200 motion picture film soundtracks?
He has been called the "Founder of the Dance Revolution." Source: kcsb.com
Do you know Harry Wayne Casey? He is founder and leader of
KC and The Sunshine Band.

1975 KC and the Sunshine Band started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'That's The Way (I Like It)', the group's second US No.1 of the year, it made No.4 in the UK. The song had already gone to No.1 in R&B in October of the same year.
Songfacts: This was originally recorded in a more risqué manner by KC & The Sunshine Band before lead singer Harry Wayne Casey toned down the "uh-huhs," making them sound like cries of jubilation. As for the "controversial" lyrics, Finch tells us: "We had to tone down the words a little bit, it used to be called 'What You Want.' And I was like, 'No, KC. That's not commercial enough, people aren't gonna figure out what you're saying.' Back then you had to watch what you say. Not like today. People come on the radio and cuss and say all kinds of s--t, but back then, you had to watch yo' mouth. You can be suggestive in a poetic way. It can mean whatever to whoever the listener is, and it doesn't really tie it down to any one thing or gender. So I figured that the more open you keep it, and unresolved, the more people you draw in."

A Bit of Music Trivia...

  • 1957Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel appeared as Tom and Jerry on ABC-TV's American Bandstand. Close friends through childhood, the first time they appeared on stage together was in a school play, Alice in Wonderland (Simon as the White Rabbit, Garfunkel as the Cheshire Cat). They later began performing together in their junior year as Tom and Jerry, with Simon as Jerry Landis and Garfunkel as Tom Graph.

Expressly Espresso

Coffee, tea, hot cocoa - yum-yum, how sweet the brew! This time add espresso to the list. After all, 75% of all caffeine consumed in the United States is coffee. Espresso appears dark and strong with a lot of flavor & complexity in a tiny little cup, but it contains no more caffeine than a regular cup of coffee. It is the richness of its aroma and flavor that draws attention toward its desire.

November 23 is...

http://af.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espresso

There are many coffee-lovers, but espresso-lovers are a breed unto themselves. That one ounce cup (or a doppio, a double) provides intense aroma and flavor with NO calories. Espresso's enjoyment originated in 1855 when the first espresso machine was introduced at the Universal Exposition in Paris. It grew in popularity becoming a social experience. The advent of home espresso machines made brewing possible at home but many still prefer the professional touch that can be achieved only by experienced brewers.

For the espresso lover, it doesn't take a lot...in fact, just a shot!

Espresso is the base for other drinks, such as a caffè latte, cappuccino, caffè macchiato, cafe mocha, or caffè Americano.

Fishy Fish

One of best ways to enjoy the outdoors is on the lake fishing. Ironic is one of simplest snacks that accompanies a fisherman on a regular basis is sardines. Each tiny little 'fishie' is packed with protein, vitamins, and nutrients that can lower blood pressure and help reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Pretty cool! The art of fishing is not for everyone...some just don't enjoy it (heaven forbid!) while others just don't have the opportunity (how sad!). The fishes on today's menu are those tiny ones prepacked, in fact, in a tin and not for everyone...they are very fishy!

November 24...

http://foodstoriesblog.com/2012/11/24/top-3-food-photos-for-november-so-far/
Sardines are one of the world's healthiest foods! They are tiny little silvery fishes, not a single type of fish but various small saltwater fish related to herring. They can be bought packed in water or oil (olive, soybean or sunflower), some even are 'swimming' in tomato sauce or 'floating' in mustard. For sure, regardless how they are packaged they have been totally cleaned, fully cooked and ready to eat.

A Bit of Sardine History...
The term sardine was first used in English during the beginning of the 15th century, possibly coming from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia where there was an abundance of sardines.
There are a multitude of ways to enjoy the sardines other than simply eating them out of the tin. Maybe this celebration will shed a totally different light on the fishy little fish, the sardine!

Defining Music

Today in Music History: November 23

Synonymous with each decade are recording artists whose music impacted each decade that followed on into the 21st century. The uniqueness in musical style personified and defined the music and culture of the times. The influence and impact on the culture and history are defined in the hit singles and albums that kept coming and coming.
The Spirit of the 60s - The Supremes were among the top hallmarks of the turbulent 60s, The Decade That Changed a Nation.

1968 Diana Ross and The Supremes were at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Love Child', their 11th No.1 in the US. The song is also notable for knocking off and keeping The Beatles' massive 'Hey Jude' off the top spot in the US.
The Groovy Times  - Members of The Beatles ventured forth as solo artists, trends leaned toward relaxing music with dance music and rock music defining the 70s genre.

1973 Ringo Starr went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Photograph'. His first of two US chart toppers as a solo artist. Written by Starr and George Harrison, the promotional film shot for the single showed Starr walking around his new house at the time, Tittenhurst Park, which had been previously the home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, (and where the 'Imagine' promo film was shot).
1976 Chicago started a three week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'If You Leave Me Now', the American group's only UK No.1. It went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance.
1979Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand continue a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'No More Tears, (Enough Is Enough). A No.3 hit in the UK.
Music in the 21st Century - Many songs from the 50s all the way through the 90s are still popular, rap solidifies its standing and less emphasis is placed on the music, it's all about showmanship.

2002 Robbie Williams started a five week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with his fifth studio album Escapology. The album became the best selling album of 2002 in the United Kingdom, selling 1.2 million copies.

2002 Jay-Z was at No.1 on the US album chart with The Blueprint 2, the rapper’s first US No.1 album.
2013 Robbie Williams scored his 11th UK No.1 album when Swings Both Ways went to the top of the charts. It was also the 1,000 No.1 UK album since the charts began in 1956 when Frank Sinatra was at No.1 with Songs For Swingin' Lovers.

Tidbits of Trivia...

  • 1984 Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee married his girlfriend, nude model Candice, (Elaine Margaret Starchuk). The marriage lasted one month. Lee has also been married to actress Heather Locklear and the former Playboy Playmate Pamela Anderson.

    • 2003'Agadoo' by Black Lace was named the worst song of all time by a panel of music writers. The song which peaked at No.2 on the UK charts in 1984 spent 30 weeks in the top 75 and went on to become the eighth best-selling single of 1984 in the UK. Black Lace themselves recorded an X-rated version of the song entitled 'Have a Screw', which was released on the B-side of the 12-inch vinyl 'Gang Bang'.

The Perfect Snack

This day's glass is not to be filled with a beverage but a foodie considered the perfect snack. It's a tasty layered treat that may contain granola, nuts, yogurt, fresh fruits, and whip cream. Pudding can be substituted for the yogurt with chocolate shavings added for texture and flavor. Bits of cookies could be added for extra crunch if not into granola. Watching those calories? Try cottage cheese instead of the whipped cream or maybe your favorite flavored Jello. Want a little extra 'kick'? Don't throw away that day old bread...cut into cubes, soak with whisked sugar and rum. Then, celebrate!
