This Day in History: August 3, 1949
The National Basketball League (NBL) was the first professional men's basketball league in the world but disbanded in 1904. Reclaimed in 1937, the National Basketball League (NBL) was a professional men's basketball league in the United States remaining strong until 1949. In 1937-38, it got its start with 13 previously independent teams. At this time, the league was created by three corporations General Electric, Firestone and Goodyear. The National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). It adopted the name National Basketball Association in the fall of 1949 after adding several teams from the rival National Basketball League (NBL).
In the present day, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is the pre-eminent men's professionalbasketball league in North America, and is widely considered to be the premier men's professional basketball league in the world. On this day in 1949, after a damaging three-year battle to win both players and fans, the rival Basketball Association of America (BAA) and National Basketball League (NBL) merge to form the National Basketball Association (NBA).
As if there was any other reason to be thankful for the NBA...
