How do you thank someone for personal sacrifice? While you are pondering an answer to this question, focus on that someone being in the military. He or she could be a veteran or presently serving our nation at home or overseas. Therefore, the question becomes one of patriotic sacrifice. Thoughts should flow in two directions: the receiving, as well as the giving. For veterans or service members, receiving thanks can elicit a wide range of emotions and varied reactions. The response could be a genuine smile or more humbly, a simple nod. After all, there is no easy, conversational response.
