Heavy Rock 'n' Rollers

Today in Music History: October 25, 1980

Rock 'n' Roll greatly influenced by rhythm and blues and country music spans many decades originating and evolving in the United States during the late 40s and early 50s. Its roots run deep experiencing its first big wave in the 50s, then, developing through the years into the more encompassing international style known as "rock music", a genre of popular music. Rock music drew strongly on a number of other genres such as blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical sources. One of the best-loved and hardest-rocking bands in the world is in the spotlight today who preferred to be categorized as 'rock and rollers' but were actually pioneers of Heavy Metal.

AC/DC  is an Australian rock band with a grungy image formed in 1973 by brothers, Malcolm and Angus Young. Angus performs in a schoolboy uniform but before adopting this trademark, he performed in gorilla, Zorro and Superman outfits. The band members themselves often had difficulty getting into some of their shows because they look as scruffy as their fans.

AC/DC is an English term for bisexual. The band did not know this, and has spent a lot of time trying to demonstrate that they like only women. They chose the name after Angus and Malcolm's sister saw "AC/DC" on a sewing machine - an abbreviation for "Alternating Current/Direct Current", a scientific name for converting electricity.

We've never pulled any punches,” vocalist Brian Johnson has said. “We just play music that’s fun and simple--the way our audience likes it.”

Oct 25, 1980: Australian rock gods AC/DC earn their first Top 40 hit with 'You Shook Me All Night Long'.
More than 30 years later, AC/DC are still inspiring rock fans all around the world with their unique sounds and powerful lyrics.
In 2009 the Recording Industry Association of America upgraded the group's US sales figures from 69 million to 71 million, making AC/DC the fifth-best-selling band in US history and the tenth-best-selling artist, selling more albums than Madonna and Mariah Carey. The RIAA also certified Back in Black as double Diamond (20 million) in US sales, and by 2007 the album had sold 22 million copies, which made it the fifth-best-selling album of all-time in the US. It is currently the second-best-selling album worldwide.
  • Brian Johnson came up with the line "She was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean" when he realized that cars and women were very much alike - they go fast, let you down, but then make you happy again when you see the new model. AC/DC has never been known for deep, meaningful lyrics.
  • There is an AC/DC tribute band called Hayseed Dixie that plays their songs in a Bluegrass style. There is also an all-female tribute band in Seattle called Hell's Belles.
  • In 1989, the US military blared AC/DC music at General Manuel Noriega's compound in Panama for 2 days straight. The dictator surrendered.

Pumpkin Central

October is already being referred to as Pumpkin Central. Our first mention of pumpkins came about a few days ago on October 18 in Gearing Up for Halloween. Lawns are already donning autumnal decorations with the pumpkin at the center of the scene. However, this month of pumpkin goodness goes beyond simply Halloween and yard decorations. After all, the pumpkin is also known as pumpkin squash since both squash and pumpkin belong to the same family.

October 26 is...
National Pumpkin Day

Pumpkins are the harbinger of the harvest season, appearing every year as the first sign of autumn. Did you know that the word “pumpkin” comes from the Greek word “pepon,” meaning "large melon"?

Pumpkins can be grown on every continent except Antarctica, and the United States produces about 1.5 billion pounds each year. At the Half Moon Bar Art and Pumpkin Festival in California, John Haskley stole the show with the 2014 record pumpkin — the heaviest pumpkin ever grown in America, which weighed a total of 2,058 pounds and was the size of a dumpster!

Celebrate National Pumpkin Day by carving a pumpkin in time for Halloween. Don't forget to bake the tasty seeds for a healthy, autumn snack! Of course, don't you dare trash that delicious pumpkin pulp!

This Day in History: October 26, 1881

Back in the days of the Wild West carrying a 6-shooter strapped to your hip was as commonplace as sitting down to the dinner table. What is it about those early days of the American West that people find so facilitating? Killing in the streets occurred regularly and hangings were public displays of capital punishment. The law and the lawless constantly battled over cattle, sheep, horses, water rights and land. Bandits or notorious outlaws were as common as bandaids along with Old West Scoundrels, Outlaw Gangs and Vigilantes.

http://pdxretro.com/2012/10/famous-gunfight-on-this-day-in-1881/

The movie industry capitalized on Wild West fascination with the life and times of Wyatt Earp always drawing a captive audience. Many Faces of Wyatt Earp have appeared on the silver screen from 1939 until 1994. A famous scene that can never be avoided in Wyatt's life is that of the Shootout at OK Corral which took place between Wyatt Earp, his two brothers, Doc Holliday and the Ike Clanton Gang on October 26, 1881.

Cowboys, Tombstone and Wyatt Earp were destined to collide and by the spring of 1881, it was apparent they were already on that collision course. The most famous gunfight showdown in history featured thirty shots fired in thirty seconds leaving three cowboys dead along with Virgil and Morgan Earp wounded. Wyatt managed to escape without even a scratch...he was a natural for dodging bullets! That was over 130 years ago but the sound of bullets whizzing through the air can still be heard within the corridors of the mind and reenactments.

 Doc Holliday
After silver was discovered nearby in 1877, Tombstone, Arizona quickly grew into one of the richest mining towns in the Southwest. Wyatt Earp, a former Kansas police officer working as a bank security guard, and his brothers, Morgan and Virgil, the town marshals, represented "law and order" in Tombstone, though they also had reputations as being power-hungry and ruthless. The Clantons and McLaurys were cowboys who lived on a ranch outside of town and sidelined as cattle rustlers, thieves and murderers. In October 1881, the struggle between these two groups for control of Tombstone and Cochise County ended in a blaze of gunfire at the OK Corral.

A Bit of 'OK Corral' History...

As with any story, there is always more than one account...another side to the story. The gunfight did not actually take place in a corral, specifically the OK Corral, nor within or next to the OK Corral. It took place in a narrow vacant lot nearby. Also, according to a fourth generation cousin of the Clantons, the confrontation was quite different from the historical recordings most of us have read or what Hollywood has depicted in the movies.

The Gunfight at OK Corral has also been immortalized in song...

by Frankie Laine, often billed as America's Number One Song Stylist, his other nicknames include Mr. RhythmOld Leather Lungs, and Mr. Steel Tonsils.

On Friday night, the Kansas City Royals secured a second win in Game 3, which broke the 1-1 tie placing the Royals in the lead. Kansas City Royals Manager Ned Yost grabbed the wheel and took the keys in the sixth inning.
In the Royals’ harrowing, 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants, Yost coaxed all 12 outs he needed from his bullpen in head-scratching, mind-bending, game-winning fashion. He rooted for his own hitter to make an out. He allowed a reliever to hit with a man on base in the seventh inning. He let a right-handed pitcher face a left-handed batter while a left-handed pitcher warmed up. He asked for a rookie who plied his trade this spring at Texas Christian University to record the night’s biggest outs. The decisions led ultimately to the Royals taking a 2-1 lead in the 110th World Series.

What you missed on TV: Little League World Series star Mo'ne Davis received the royal treatment at AT&T Park during Game 4, participating in pregame ceremonies on the field and throwing out the ceremonial first pitch as MLB honored the 75th anniversary of Little League Baseball.

And of course, she climbed all the way to the pitcher's mound and threw a strike.

Today in Music History: October 26, 1962

If you had to select one band to compare with the Beatles, which band would that be? You may or may not have a preference. One, in your eyes, might outshine the other simply because of the differences in styles of music. Then, it is totally possible both are at the top of your list since they crossed paths on the charts nearly 50 years ago. The most prominent argument identifies one as a pop group and the other a rock band. The spotlight today is not on the Beatles but...

http://rockhall.com/inductees/the-rolling-stones/bio/
The Rolling StonesThe highest earning rock band in history, The Rolling Stones' concerts have grossed over $750 million. July 12, 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones’ first gig—making them, according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the record holders for rock-band longevity. Through their five decades as a band, no one has yet stripped the Rolling Stones of their title as The World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band. The Rolling Stones logo is very eye-catching and has gained extreme popularity all over the world. Hence it is classified among the most instantly recognized logos ever created.

http://www.famouslogos.org/logos/the-rolling-stones-logoWhy the "Red Tongue" logo?
The famous tongue logo was inspired by the Indian Hindu goddess Kali The Destroyer. It was designed by John Pasche, who was a student at the Royal College of Art in London when he got a gig designing a poster for The Stones 1970 European tour. Mick Jagger was wowed by the poster, so he asked Pasche to create a logo for their new record label. Jagger suggested Kali as a starting point, and Pasche incorporated Mick's mouth into the design. The logo first appeared on the inner sleeve of the Sticky Fingers album. The cover of that album was designed by Andy Warhol, who is sometimes mistakenly credited with creating the lips logo.

"It's a noise we make. That's all. You could be kind and call it music." ~Mick Jaggar

1962 The Rolling Stones, (known as The Rollin' Stones), and consisting of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, pianist Ian Stewart and drummer Tony Chapman recorded their first demo tape at Curly Clayton Studios in Highbury, London. They recorded three songs, Jimmy Reed's 'Close Together', Bo Diddley's 'You Cant Judge A Book By The Cover' and Muddy Waters''Soon Forgotten'.
"When you are growing up there are 2 institutional places that effect you most powerfully; the church, which belongs to God, & the public library, which belongs to you. The public library is a great equaliser" ~Keith Richards (who is widely rumored to have an extensive library & be a avid reader)

  • The Rolling Stones don't go on tour without their snooker table. In addition, the rock stars asked for video games and a ping pong table in their USA '97-'98 rider. For the 2005 "A Bigger Bang" tour the band has dropped video games for watching cricket on satellite or cable TV. The latter rider also reveals what names the rock singers give to their dressing rooms backstage: Mick Jagger's is "Workout," Charlie Watts has "Cotton Club," Ron Wood is in "Recovery" and Keith has "Camp X-Ray."

  • Their long hair was considered outrageous in 1963. They took out a Christmas ad in a paper saying "Best wishes to all the starving hairdressers and their families."
  • The Rolling Stones are named after Muddy Waters'"Rollin' Stone Blues." Blues artists like Waters had a strong influence on The Stones.

"We were never going to stop even if they told us to." ~Brian Jones

On July 3, 1969, Brian Jones was found at the bottom of his swimming pool at his home in Hartfield, East Sussex, England. The death was ruled an accident. He remains Forever 27.

At the heart of America are the armed forces that protect and defend our nation. Each branch of the military holds a special place with specific duties and obligations. Salute sharply to all of the men and women in all branches of the service who protect our country and each of us as individuals. They can be called upon at a moment's notice to perform a risky and perilous mission for the freedoms America offers on a continuous daily basis. They train diligently both physically and mentally so they will be prepared to prevail in any mission they face.

October 27 is...
U.S. Navy Day

U.S. Navy Day is the original day to celebrate the U.S. Navy, and though this celebration officially was replaced by Armed Forces Day (Third Saturday in May for the U.S.) in 1949, the celebrations of Navy Day continue on, especially within the Navy itself. Additionally, research undertaken in the 1970s showed the ‘true’ birthday of the US Navy to be October 13th, and the date was officially changed – however, the entrenched celebration still holds sway, and October 27th is generally celebrated instead.

A Bit of History...

Throughout its history, the Navy has successfully met all its challenges. America's naval service began during the American Revolution, when on Oct. 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized a few small ships, thus, creating the Continental Navy. Esek Hopkins was appointed commander in chief and 22 officers were commissioned, including John Paul Jones.

The 27th October was suggested as a date to recognize the birthday of one of the Navy’s supporters who was Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1897, Theodore Roosevelt. Before 1949 the U.S. Navy would send its ships to various ports for Navy Day, with 1945 having a large celebration; the President at the time (President Harry S. Truman) reviewed the fleet in the New York Harbor, and there are pictures of ships docked along the Hudson River for the celebrations.

Navy Day was last officially observed on October 27, 1949 when Louis A. Johnson directed that the U.S. Navy’s participation in such events would occur in May, on Armed Forces Day. He was the secretary of the newly created Department of Defense.

The Navy League was not affected by this decision as it is a Civilian Organization and they continued to organize events as before.

The Subway: NOT the sandwich!

This Day in History: October 27, 1904

For people living in New York City, it is hard to visualize life without the subway, especially with over 8 million residents as of 2013.Mayor George McClellan takes the controls on the inaugural run of the city's innovative new rapid transit system on this day in history. London boasts the world's oldest underground train network opening in 1863 and Boston built the first subway in the United States in 1897. However, the New York City subway soon became the largest American system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Subway
The City Hall station of the IRT Lexington Avenue Line opened on October 27, 1904.
October 27th, 2014 marks the 110th anniversary of the subway system. The first train ran north from City Hall to 145th Street and Broadway. The system that now benefits 5.8 million daily customers sprang from a single line that didn’t leave the confines of Manhattan.
The system has grown into a four-borough operation that each day moves more than double the population of Chicago. Trains running along 24 lines feed the City’s schools, businesses and recreational venues. New York could not be the 24/7 City it is today without the MTA New York City subway and the system will continue to nurture the City’s growth far into the future. Source: Photos

The subway system is not without its share of problems. The subway became the home for graffiti, which was a serious problem in the 70s and 80s. Even today litter accumulation is an issue and the 2010 budget crisis has threatened to curtail trash removal from the subway system. Then, there is the noise level and unfortunately, the rats.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Subway
Graffiti became a notable symbol of declining service during the 1970s.

Not sure one would ever see an empty subway car in NYC with some 4.5 million passengers filling the train cars every day. Should there ever be one its interior would look something like...

Did you know there was once a Miss Subways contest?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Subways
An advertisement for Miss Subways
at the New York City Transit Museum.
From 1941 to 1976, the Board of Transportation/New York City Transit Authority sponsored the "Miss Subways" publicity campaign. In the musical On the Town, the character Miss Turnstiles is based on the Miss Subways campaign. In one scene, the musical shows three sailors taking an uptown train at Times Square.

The campaign was resurrected in 2004, for one year, as "Ms. Subways". It was part of the 100th anniversary celebrations. Featuring young models, entertainers and others, the monthly campaign, which included the winners' photos and biographical blurbs on placards in subway cards, featured such winners as Mona Freeman and prominent New York City restaurateur Ellen Goodman. The winner of this contest was Caroline Sanchez-Bernat, an actress from Morningside Heights. Source: en.wikipedia.com

Bottom Line: No matter how crowded or dirty, the subway is one New York City institution few New Yorkers—or tourists—could do without.

Expect the unexpected on the subway!

Midnight Train Ride

Today in Music History: October 27

http://awakenings2012.blogspot.com/2012/11/life-on-train.html

When it comes to soul (R&B), some of the best songs center around the train as music and lyrics takes us back to times past when East Meets West. In fact, what could possibly be more nostalgic than reflections upon the train and comparing a train ride with the walks of life. The evolution of the train is much like life, its journey through time collects treasured memories of people and places as it stops and goes from one station to another. Have you ever thought about comparing life to a train ride or a series of train rides (Life on the Train)? Today's spotlight is on a soul group whose signature song is about a midnight train ride.

https://rockhall.com/inductees/gladys-knight-and-the-pips/bio/

Gladys Knight and the PipsOne of the most respected and longest-lived soul groups, Gladys Knight and the Pips boast hits spanning four decades. Their chart records scored higher than ever during the mid-1970s with a smoother, more accessible sound, a hit album, Imagination (1973) and three gold singles: "I've Got to Use My Imagination,""Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" and the Grammy Award-winning No. 1 hit "Midnight Train to Georgia" (Best R&B Vocal Performance), which is the focus music for today in history.

1973Gladys Knight and the Pips started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Midnight Train To Georgia'. It was the group's 18th Top 40 hit and first No.1. The record won the 1974 Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus and has become Knight's signature song.
Other songs involving trains include "Last Train To Clarksville,""City Of New Orleans", "Love Train", "Runaway Train", and of course Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'", which also has a "midnight train." Train themes seem to be most popular in folk music and R&B.

  • You might ask what, exactly, a "pip" is besides Knight's backing singers. Well, a 'pip' is casino/gaming jargon for the spots on a die or domino. So when you're at a craps table and you roll a "hard 8" on the dice, that means that there's four pips showing on the face of each die, as opposed to an "easy 8" which would be the statistically more common 2-6 or 3-5 combinations of pips.

  • Films and television shows in which "Midnight Train To Georgia" is part of the soundtrack include The Deer Hunter, 30 Rock, House M.D., Broadcast News, and Las Vegas. It also gets its day in the sun in the 1974 episode of VH1's I Love the '70s: Volume 2. Richard Pryor (we still miss him) also used it in his 1977 special.
  • This song has special relevance when you consider 21st century online dating, which unites partners over the internet who are separated by a great distance. The decision the protagonist has to make, choosing to move to Georgia to "live in his world," is a common one that people have to eventually face if they start a long-distance relationship.

And the music goes on beating to the rhythm of the changing times...

Liberty Island
ManhattanNew York, U.S.
As a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States of America, the Statue of Liberty began as "Liberty Enlightening the World." Having been designed in France, the dismantled 151-ft statue arrived in the United States enclosed in more than 200 packing cases. Its copper sheets were reassembled, and the last rivet of the monument was fitted on October 28, 1886, during a dedication presided over by President Grover Cleveland. As witness to the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty were numerous French and American dignitaries.

The statue became a symbol of welcome for all immigrants coming to America, as well as a universal symbol of freedom. However, according to the statue historian Barry Moreno, it “was never built for immigrants.”
It was,” he recalled, “built to pay tribute to the United States of America, the Declaration of Independence, American democracy, and democracy throughout the world. It honored the end of slavery, honored the end of all sorts of tyranny and also friendship between France and America.”
The Statue of Liberty is located in New York Harbor on the tiny island known today as Liberty Island. Opening on January 1, 1892, the island was initially named Ellis Island and became the gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States as the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 until 1954.
"For the vast majority of immigrants, Ellis Island truly was an "Island of Hope" - the first stop on their way to new opportunities and experiences in America. For the rest, it became the "Island of Tears" - a place where families were separated and individuals were denied entry into this country."

This Day in History: October 28, 1965

Dual monumental celebration is shared on this day in history almost 80 years apart. Their commonality focuses on a gateway: the Gateway to America and the Gateway Arch.

On October 28, 1886, the last rivet of Lady Liberty was fitted during a dedication in New York Harbor in celebration of An Iconic Gift from France. Within the shadow of the Statue of Liberty lies Liberty Island, formerly Ellis Island, that represented the Gateway to America for over twelve million immigrants from 1982 to 1924. The statue became a symbol of welcome for all immigrants coming to America, as well as a universal symbol of freedom

On this day in history almost 80 years later into the 20th century, on October 28, 1965, the tallest man-made monument in the United States, actually the Western Hemisphere, was completed: the Gateway Arch, a spectacular 630-foot-high parabola of stainless steel marking the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial on the waterfront of St. Louis, Missouri. Construction began on February 29, 1964.

This iconic monument symbolizes Westward expansion by honoring the spirit of pioneers who traversed hazardous terrain and conditions by horseback and wagon train to seek their fortunes west of the Mississippi River. The grandeur of this architectural wonder is breath-taking to say the least offering the opportunity for visitors to see 30 miles in every direction and veer 200 years into the past when Lewis and Clark set out on their great expedition.

All About the Music

Today in Music History: October 28

Some days in music history the hits, both as singles and in albums, just keep coming and coming and coming. A bit of trivia seeps in enough to keep history interesting bringing on a smile or two as the trip down memory lane spans decade after decade. There is sadness along with happiness, songs of rhythm and soul, and compilations for charity. It's all about the music...where it has been, where it is going!

1957After a show at the Pan Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles, local police told Elvis Presley that he was not allowed to wiggle his hips onstage, the local press also ran headlines saying Elvis would have to clean up his act. The next night, the Los Angeles Vice Squad filmed his entire concert, to study his performance.

1958 Buddy Holly appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, where he lip-synched ‘It's So Easy’ and ‘Heartbeat’. It would be Holly's last major TV appearance. Many of Holly's fans consider 'It's So Easy' one of his best songs, but it was never released as a single. Linda Ronstadt had a hit with this in 1977 charting at #5 in the US. The last Buddy Holly single to be released during his lifetime, 'Heartbeat', was only a minor hit in the US with a No. 82 Billboard Hot 100 peak. It was only a few short months later when America experienced the day the music died. In 1972, Don McLean commemorated that ill-fated event in the lyrics "So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greatest_Hits_%28The_Supremes_album%29

1967'Diana Ross and the Supremes Greatest Hits' started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart. Although original member Florence Ballard is pictured on the cover and sings on all the tracks, by the time the LP was released, she had been fired from the group and replaced by Cindy Birdsong.
1972The United States Council for World Affairs announced it was adopting The Who song 'Join Together' as it's official theme tune. A call to "join together with the band" seemed a little out of character for The Who, and especially Pete Townshend, who famously threatened to kill anyone who came on stage during their Woodstock performance. Taken less literally, the song makes more sense as a plea to young people, urging them to unite and take action. The World Affairs Councils of America represents and supports the largest national non-partisan network of local councils that are dedicated to educating, inspiring and engaging Americans in international affairs and the critical global issues of our times. The network consists of almost 100 councils in over 40 states.
1978Nick Gilder went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Hot Child In The City', not a hit in the UK, but also a hit in Canada. The song lyrics were written and recorded by Gilder as an ode to runaways.
Despite the song's innocent and catchy pop stylings, the tune is based on Gilder's experiences witnessing child prostitution. "I've seen a lot of young girls, 15 and 16, walking down Hollywood Boulevard with their pimps. Their home environment drove them to distraction so they ran away, only to be trapped by something even worse. It hurts to see that so I tried writing from the perspective of a lecher – in the guise of an innocent pop song."Source: en.wikipedia.com
1978The animated cartoon, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park, was shown on NBC-TV in the U.S. The four rock stars had to deal with a mad scientist who went crazy in an amusement park. All four members of Kiss had just released their individual solo albums.
1989Janet Jackson started a four week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814'. The album blends dance-pop and rhythm and blues with industrial music and funk. Only one of three albums to produce seven Top-ten US singles, the other two being Thriller by Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen's Born In The USA.

2001The album God Bless America, went to No.1 on the US charts on October 28, 2001. Featured on the album are tracks from various artists contributing their time and talents for charity. The selections ranged over many decades, with recordings being used going back to 1945. God Bless America was a 2001 charity album composed of American patriotic or spiritual songs, released on October 16 of that year in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It was released specifically to benefit the Twin Towers Fund, directing what the album cover said would be a "substantial portion of the proceeds" towards families of firefighters, police officers, and other responders lost in the rescue response to the September 11 attacks. The artists and recordings featured were largely from Columbia Records.
"Touching the worlds of pop, folk, rock, gospel, country, and more, God Bless America was designed with the feelings of troubled Americans in mind."

Here are but a few of the unforgettable recordings:

Following the September 11 attacks, Canadian pop star Celine Dion performed a new arrangement of "God Bless America" on the telethon America: A Tribute to Heroes. The recorded version of this, done the day before the telethon in the event something happened and Dion could not appear, became the title track of this compilation.
John Mellencamp's "Peaceful World" lyrics led it to be somewhat of a song of comfort following the September 11, 2001 attacks, being performed during The Concert for New York City along with a live acoustic version without Arie being included in Columbia Records' October 2001 benefit album God Bless America
Lee Greenwood is best known for his single and signature song"God Bless the USA", which was popular when it was originally released in 1984, and became popular again after the September 11, 2001 attacks (becoming his highest charting pop hit, reaching No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100).
Bruce Springstein & The E Street Band's "Land of Hope and Dreams" was recorded during a performance at Madison Square Garden on July 1, 2000 following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The same recording was included on the God Bless America charity album, released on October 16, 2001.
"Amazing Grace" is a Christianhymn with words written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton (1725–1807), published in 1779. With the message that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God, "Amazing Grace" is one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world.

What's happenin'?

Meow, Meow, Meow...etc. The curiosity of our feline friends is never ceasing! Anyone who owns a cat is very familiar with the curious nature that is a natural instinct throughout daily routines. By nature, a cat is an explorer and a natural hunter, constantly on the hunt but not necessarily for food. They are always on a quest for the unknown. Antics and attitudes that may seem strange to us appear very normal to the cat. Cats like, often demand attention, but want it when they want it and in the amount they want...on their terms so to speak! With that being said, it is time for the cat to have his or her day...literally!

October 29 is...

"What greater gift than the love of a cat?"—Charles Dickens

National Cat Day encourages the celebration, worship and adoration of cats, in the same way that human cultures have since the dawn of civilization. The day was created in 2005 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige, whose aim was to raise awareness of the number of cats that are rescued each year and to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the felines in their lives.
Nationalcatday.com says "on October 29th....it's party time! We encourage you to spoil your fur baby a little more on National Cat Day than any other day (you don't want them to get too demanding do you?) by buying them a new toy drenched in cat nip, giving them something simply scrumptious to eat, offering LOTS more cuddling and making a donation to  your local shelter in their honor. The best way you can celebrate though is to save a life!"
Cats are one of the most beloved human companions of all time. They were first domesticated in the Middle East’s Fertile Crescent as early as 12,000 years ago. When humans relied on hunting as their main source of food, dogs were most useful – but when the first agricultural societies emerged, cats became invaluable. Domesticated cats became responsible for keeping grain stores free of mice and other rodents. Today, cats can be found in 34% of American households, making them the most popular house pet in the United States.

Who put the 'ram' in rama, lama ding dong? Who put the 'bop' in the bop shoo bop shoo bop? Who put the 'bomp' in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp? Who is that masked man anyway? Such is the question for the group in today's spotlight. Who is '?' in ? and the Mysterians?

? and the Mysterians - one of the first Latino rock groups to have a major hit

During 40+ years in the public eye, Question Mark, aka '?', has maintained an aura of mystery. Why the mystic? "Q", known to many of his friends, claimed to be an alien and actually changed his name legally to a punctuation mark.
The Mysterians took shape in 1962 when four Mexican-American teenagers from Saginaw, Michigan, began playing instrumental music inspired by the surf bands like the Ventures and by the loud, raw sound of the legendary guitarist Link Wray. Taking their name from a Japanese science fiction movie involving invaders from another planet, the Mysterians soon made the acquaintance of their own alleged alien—a young man in sunglasses who approached them after a gig at Michigan's Mt. Holly Ski Lodge offering to manage the group. Identifying himself to the Mysterians only as "?," this young man would soon become the group's lead singer and primary songwriter. It was a poem of his called "Too Many Teardrops" that became "96 Tears."Source: History.com

  • Songfacts:"?" was Rudy Martinez, the composer of the song and the band's frontman who wanted to be anonymous. At one point he referred to the individual band members only by three-letter names. The mystery helped market the group, who wore dark glasses to add to the intrigue.
  • The band used to be called XYZ with ?, and played their first gig in Adrian, Michigan in 1964.

Ick or treat? 5 strange facts about candy corn

Did you know candy corn has been around for more than a century? In more than 100 years, its look, taste or design has never changed!

According to oral tradition, George Renninger, a candymaker at the Wunderlee Candy Company in Philadelphia, invented the revolutionary tri-color candy in the 1880s.  It was made to mimic a kernel of corn and became instantly popular because of its innovative design. It was one of the first candies to feature three different colors! The Goelitz Confectionery Company brought the candy to the masses at the turn of the 20th century. The company, now called Jelly Belly Candy Co., has the longest history in the industry of making candy corn -- although the method has changed, it still uses the original recipe.

Today, candy corn is a favorite American treat to enjoy during the Halloween season. The National Confectioners Association estimates that 20 million pounds of candy corn are sold annually. Grab a handful to celebrate National Candy Corn Day!

Game 7 did not deter one bit in the excitement. No one team shut out the other as both contenders remained in full swing! It was the Giants, however, who came out on top capturing their third World Series title in the last five years with a 3-2 victory against the Kansas City Royals.

Today in Music History: October 30, 1944

The film industry yields entertainment by bringing stories to life on the silver screen: intriguing, mysterious, adventurous, romantic, futuristic, historical - war and peace, family, drama, comedy, even horror. Each different genre demands its own kind of music accompaniment to make it complete. Otherwise, we would still be reigning in the days of silent films! The same goes for Broadway and the ballet. Each performance is accompanied by appropriate orchestral arrangements. Today's spotlight shines on a visionary composer from the 40s often referred to as "the Dean of American Composers."

http://www.biography.com/people/aaron-copland-9256998Aaron Copeland:an American composer, composition teacher, writer, and later in his career a conductor of his own and other American music

Aaron Copeland was a music natural. He studied piano and composition both in the United States and Europe later influencing many other great orchestral leaders. He became one of America's foremost composers of the 20th century whose influential music had a distinctive blend of classical, folk and jazz. Aaron Copeland died in 1990 at the age of 90 years old.
Copland was a renowned composer of film scores as well, working on Of Mice and Men (1939), Our Town (1940) and The North Star (1943)—receiving Academy Award nominations for all three projects. He eventually won an Oscar for The Heiress (1949). And more than a decade later, Copland composed a stark, unsettling score for the controversial Something Wild (1961). Selections from his various works would be used in TV series and commercials over the years, as well as films like Spike Lee’s He Got Game (1998). Source: Aaron Copeland Biography
Geoffrey Moull conducts members of the CBC Radio Orchestra
in a live performance of Aaron Copland's 'Appalachian Spring'
(the original chamber orchestra version for 13 instruments composed in 1944)
1944Music that brilliantly evoked the rural American heartland made Aaron Copland famous. One such work—arguably his greatest—was the score for the ballet Appalachian Spring, which became one of the most recognizable and beloved pieces of American music ever written almost immediately following its world premiere on this day in 1944.
Though written expressly for the ballet and for only 13 instrumentalists—a limitation dictated by the size of the orchestra pit at the Library of Congress—Appalachian Spring was soon adapted into an orchestral suite, which is the form in which it became widely popular. Appalachian Spring was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1945.
"The fullest, loveliest and most deeply poetical of all his theater scores....It is, as the saying goes, a natural." ~New York Times review on Aaron Copeland's Appalachian Spring (1944)

October is... rapidly nearing its last day, which will end in celebration of Halloween. Throughout the month apples have been at the center of attention since October is National Apple Month and apples are APPle, AppLE, APPLE-licious! Of all the apple celebrations, one in particular stands out during local fall festivals and is a must for Halloween.

      October 31 is...

      National Candy Apple Day

"Almost all wild apples are handsome. They cannot be too gnarly and crabbed and rusty to look at. The gnarliest will have some redeeming traits even to the eye." -- Henry David Thoreau, Wild Apples

Candy apples are made by coating an apple with a layer of sugar heated to hard crack stage. The most common sugar coating is made from sugar (white or brown), corn syrup, water, cinnamon and red food coloring. A variation on the red candy apple is the caramel apple. Then, with the holiday right around the corner, decorated Halloween candy apples fit the scene most appropriately.

http://www.womansday.com/food-recipes/cooking-tips-shortcuts/how-to-eat-a-candy-appleAmerican William W. Kolb, a veteran Newark candy-maker, produced his first batch of candied apples in 1908. While experimenting in his candy shop with red cinnamon candy for the Christmas trade, he dipped some apples into the mixture and put them in the windows for display. He sold the whole first batch for 5 cents each and later sold thousands yearly. Soon candied apples were being sold along the Jersey Shore, at the circus and in candy shops across the country, according to the Newark News in 1948. Source: en.wikipedia.org
